I found £18 of calls to a premium number on my phone bill today (I am on ntl but it was on the BT bill). They came from dialler software on my brother's computer that he did not know was there and can't explain.

I assume you use some kind of dialer box to access NTL ?

You can ask BT to bar (free) premium rate numbers over the BT network - of course, if wont stop any premium rate numbers roued over NTL..

    Regards
    Sunil
  • I'll have bt block the premium numbers, but frankly the best thing for my phone bill is having my brother go back to university.

Heinz, I know there is no chance of getting the money back - the pigs will be staying firmly on the ground.
  • I have also just opened the BT bill & have loads of these calls, value £96, all between 20 & 24 June, the very dates when Freeserve were changing over to Wanadoo. Does anyone have a phone no to call W >:(anadoo to speak to a human being?
  • You could have contacted NTL freedom customer services on  0808 2000000 found through http://www.saynoto0870.com/.

As far as premium rate numbers are concerned contact BT and ask them to bar all outgoing calls to 090 numbers - better still get broadband, disconnect your dial up modem and join onetel & https://www.18866.co.uk for cheap calls.

TalkTalk's current Talk 1+ offer is better than Onetel's current offers.

  • Register for 18866 for weekday calls at 1 penny a call & register with Onetel Standard (no monthly fee) and get weekend calls totally free. Mobile calls are 20% cheaper than BT with onetel, however if they are only short calls 18866 are cheaper as the connection charge is only 1p.

    Even better is:

Use the TalkTalk special Talk1+ tariff for free evening and weekend calls (better than Onetel as it includes evening calls)
Use 18866 for 1p/call to UK landlines during the day
Use 18866 to call mobiles at weekends
use 1899 to call mobiles during the week.

If you know a number is on T-Mobile or Vodafone you can save even more on weekday evenings but that means you need to know which network/number range you are calling.

  • this is kinda related ???
my gran has run up a phone bill calling a couple of premium rate numbers she didn't realise were. I've contacted icstis and they said try their web site. None of the numbers i entered were in their data base. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to find the companies so i can try for a refund. It's well over £200!!!! They all start with 0906............ any ideas appreciated ;D

Telephone numbers starting with 0906 are designated 'adult' lines (ie those with a sexual content). According to Ofcom these should be all registered lines which charge a premium on top of the cost of the call.

Finally, NTL have said I do not have to pay the cost of the premium rate dialler scam, which got on my computer, it has been an ongoing battle for a year or maybe more! Thanks to soo lin for the advice given by the way, I used it, basically I argued that as the company were well known (scam) investigated by icstis and known to them) that it would not be unreasonable of me to expect that as such my internet/phone provider would have barred that number, ie (it was a known scam), well I refused to pay it, but did pay my bills otherwise and on time. I got lots of threats (letters)to cut me off - on a monthly basis, and calls from their collections department on a weekly basis. I had to repeat my story continually, my file must have been very long and the collections dept never had it up when they rung, nor did they liaise with any other departments, they just said that I was on an automatic dial from them as I had an outstanding amount (the premium rate dialler). One of them said they could remove me from it, another said no they could not. I found some of the collections dept staff were ok, then some were insisting I pay it. Well I haven't. And now I don't get hassle as I stuck to my guns and NTL said that as a 'goodwill gesture' they will make my bill back to zero and write the outstanding amount off. I have asked for this in writing. Unsuprisingly this has not been forthcoming... what a headache!!
