  • I cleared my millstone in Jan this year, 54G cash, walked in the front door and paid it off.1.5G of this was penalties. TBH i could not have cared less about the penalties, it was cheaper than waiting for Xyears playing by their rules. To walk out the building society with my wife, a smile on my face and a spring in my step was worth more than a poxy grand and a half to me. Either bite the bullet and take the penalties or leave your excess in the highest interest account that you can find. Defo 2 camps on the pay off not pay off. Some people are comfortable with a big millstone, me i like to owe nothing to anyone. Good luck and well done for getting active on taking control.

thanks everyone - this is definitely the way to go for us and sod the rest of them !!

small update - phoned mortgage ppl today to ask if they had an online bit - they didnt - but whilst on the phone thought id ask for a balance ....

back in april we paid off our yearly 10% - about 4k - and the new balance was roughly 36k so after the balance only going down about 2k a year the lst few years imagine my delight when she tells me our balance is £32,199.14 - so thats down almost 4k in as many months !!!
we are now hoping to revise our five year plan and are thinking 4 years - maybe even 3 at a push !!

this is purely just from doubling up our payment each month

so im all excited about this now and pretty impatient but also again pretty cheesed off to be thinking we could have been doing this for the last 2 years and would possibly only have 18 months left to go !! oh well the time will pass i guess - i just want my house in portugal and i want it now !!! LOL

have decided to play properly now so have pmed dithering dad with my bits !!

however by our reckoning at the time our fixed rate comes to an end - sept 09- we will still owe approx 15k
but i doubt we will get any kind of deal for this amount and i think we will possibly begrudge having to go onto standard variable rate - unless its super low of course - so will prolly ask my parents to lend us that last 15k and then spend the last year paying them our mortgage payments

now based on all this we will be approx 7k short - so we have 3 years to save 7k !!

hmmm.....better get thinking caps on !!

Wife and I have been looking at this site and using the Egg Mortgage Calc to see how we can pay off our mortgage faster.

It encouraged us to use some savings and pay the maximum 10% off our first year....this alone has saved us almost £100,000....the interest only portion of our mortgage!

We've decided to try and pay off another 10% next year...that should save another £50,000 interest and reduce our term by 5 years.

It's great knowing that the banks are not getting all this money!

ive rapidly remembered why i ant stand ebay - no one ever wants my stuff !!

i spent most of tuesday listing about 20 items that were a bit to good to charity shop and i cant bear car booting around here - everyone wants really good stuff for stupid prices and i dont like the attitude of most buyers around here

and of course i prolly picked the worst time to ebay - post strike - but ive got a couple of opening bids and a pathetic couple of watchers with only one more day left - all this hassle for literally a couple of quid once all the fees are paid

i should have taken it all to the charity shop like i thought originally - :(
