Why have you not applied for one of the many Xmas temp jobs ?
Might not be perfect but it could lead to a job after Xmas or you find out about an internal vacancy.0 -

I did have a interview at poundland for a Christmas job but they said they did have a job for me, but they told the jobcentre i could to volunteer work with them.0

You are obviously an employer who doesn't turn down the chance to have workers who you don't need to pay.

Is my example above wrong. I didn't need the person so could have just said no but that person good attitude got them into the industry they wanted to be in and got them a paid job.
Explain what was wrong when I don't tout for it, I don't let them replace another member of staff, I don't need them and I let them choose what hours and days they wish to work?
If I had said no there is a strong chance that person would still be looking to get into the industry.

I have allowed someone wanting to get into my industry to do work experience for me. They came to me and were on top of my normal paid staff so not replacing anyone, they chose the hours and the days of the week, and because they showed willing and the ability to cope in the industry when someone left 3 months into the work experience they got the job.
If they had not shown the proactive attitude and willingness to get work experience for a reference then they would not have got the job and would most likley still be waiting to get into the industry.

And just to be clear, I do think Poundland are wrong in their use of these work programmes and I have refused multiple times to take apprentices on because in my industry they simply are not required and I would feel it is an abuse of their purpose.
That's the major difference though, with all due respects (and well, I include myself as it's technically my industry) the retail industry doesn't exactly need much in the way of introduction. When I received a few suggested applications for volunteer work from the Jobcentre, two of them involved giving my skills for free to "charities" which are in fact semi commercial. They involved me doing twenty hours a week editing and designing using Photoshop, and not getting paid for it - nice work if you can get it;)0
