last week I had a interview at the jobcentre for a paid job at poundland. today I went to see my advisor and he said poundland had been in touch, they told him that interviewed well but they didn't offer me a paid job.
but they said they work take me on doing some work experience (unpaid) my advisor said they are crying out for volunteers
should I do it?
I thought it was a bit of a cheek, they don't have a paid job for me but they want me to work 40hrs per week for free :rotfl::(

do you think I am being unreasonable for not wanting to do it ?

That doesn't sound right to me, 40 hours a week for no pay, is that even legal? It could be part of some training scheme. I did find an article online, I can't post the link as I'm a newbie and the system won't let me but "...in autumn 2011 that she had to stop volunteering and complete unpaid work experience at Poundland as part of back-to-work training or she would lose her Jobseeker’s Allowance. ... In a judgment published today, the Court of Appeal upheld the claim..." it's from 2013 but thought it might help.

I just searched volunteering at poundland and it was the first non-advertised link that come up.

I know a lady who did an unpaid trial there and was then offered a permanent full time job. Have you asked the Jobcentre if they'll cover your expenses?

Just say 'No'. Your advisor is trying to con you into signing up for a Mandatory Work Program.

Poundland are notoriious for this 'scam' where they interview loads of people, but none are successful in getting the job, but those who are suitable are offered 'voluntary' work.

There is no way that I would work for free for a commercial business.
If a job is worth doing then it is worth paying the NMW - at least.
This is exploitation pure and simple.

    +1 to that !
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • Is this the workfayre thing again? I thought they'd stopped that

If it's one of those things for 6 weeks I would probably do it and hope for a job offer at the end of it

I could give you a job doing my gardening for six weeks, and I MAY give you a job at the end of it, then again I MAY NOT;)

No, if there's enough work for me to do 40 hours unpaid then there's enough work & money to pay me for it - Poundland have always been supporters of these schemes & will continue to be so.

In 6 weeks time the christmas rush will be over and all paid/unpaid christmas temps will be out of a job.
