recover program

had an accident with a usb drive last night (just knocked it and it separated slightly), this morning I went to use it and got message "you need to format the disk in drive F before you can use it", tried in cmd to use chkdsk and got this message " the type of file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives".

Can someone please give me a recommendation of how to get access to the info on the usb or for a recovery program.

Thank you in advance for any help

    Oh dear :(

I would say your chances are slim with a flash device but you could try recuva

If TestDisk doesn't do it, nothing will.

right guys I have tried a number of he suggested solutions but to no avail, some wont even recognise the usb others say there is 64megabyte when it is a 16gb usb.
has anyone another suggestion for trying to extract my info from this usb
  • You could try putting drive in waterproof plastic and stick in the freezer for a few hours then retry. It's a hit n miss solution with hdd when all else has failed.

If TestDisk doesn't do it, nothing will. Are you sure that you followed the instructions correctly. I just utilised it to retrieve data from an external USB HDD exhibiting the same symptoms.
  • Quick Format the drive then run the above programs.

Quick format removes the file header information only, it does not delete the data, so disk looks empty but files still exist.

Once formatted Windows can access the disk again.

Forget the waterproof plastic thingy and freezer - assuming we are talking about a solid state USB drive.

    DO NOT DO THIS ..

This is a terrible idea, that will only work in a very precise set of circumstances.
The drive has to be mechanical, and the symptoms must be that it produces a very faint buzz when trying to access data.
That would indicate the read head is stuck and SOMETIMES, freezing and unfreezing can free it.

Most of the time though, it just completely kills the drive.
And condensation (water) can form on the plate . Bad news

If none of the software has been use to you , then it is either time to accept defeat, or call a data recovery firm.
Most will let you send them the drive, and tell you if they can recover your stuff before you need to pay, so its for you to decide if the data you lost is worth the cost they quote.
Its usually around £300 squid - depending on how much data they can recover

I said when all else fails. Unless the OP wants his data sooo badly he wants to fork of £300 squid. Otherwise there's nothing to lose is there?

apart from short circuiting the usb port.

it's a flash drive, the freezer is never a good place for any type of drive.
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
