I actually installed a 10-15 year old version of Winamp because of VLC behaving badly.

Sure it plays videos fine, but there's some sort of HIDDEN volume normalising or clipping or compression that it does to music tracks, which sounds like someone has got the volume knob and keeps randomly (and rapidly) twisting it.

It's like you'll get a track intro at a certain volume, but then as more instruments fade in and the beat picks up, it just goes all over the shop.

I spent weeks trying to fix it, made sure all that stuff was turned off in settings, I got it a little better but there's just some hard coded f**kwittery going on with VLC.
It REALLY !!!!ed me off because VLC was always a really convenient, no p1ssing about with libraries/etc, no nonsense application.

You can pick up older (and often better) versions of a lot of software here

Have you tried changing Winamp's skin?

    How would I do that?

The only one it lists is WinAmp Classic which presumably is what I'm using. When I click on the link for "Get skins" I get "Not Found

The requested URL /skins was not found on this server."

I had an issue that didn't give me the Winamp Modern skin when I didn't select all of the options during install. Can you make sure you've downloaded the 'Full' version and reinstall it, making sure you don't choose the standard or lite version during setup?

After that, you can get more skins by googling winamp skins and downloading them to your Skins folder wherever your copy of winamp is installed.

Thanks, I've done that, although the differences in the skins seem rather superficial.

All I really want to do is have it play songs from my Music folder randomly. There's a button without any text on it which has a tooltip text "Add Files to Playlist". But this seems to require me to go through every album on my pc and add the songs in that in one go. So it's going to take ages to go through all my albums. How can I instruct it to select all the songs in my Music folder to the playlist?

I opened up Clementine yesterday and it played music but showed no user interface. And it kept coming up with messages about encryption so I'm not impressed with it at all.

What happens if you drag & drop your music folder into the playlist window?

Have gone back to Windows Media Player. It's probably a new version by now so hopefully doesn't have the problems I was finding five years ago.

Amazing what a hassle it can be just to randomly play songs on your computer.
