Can Temp Jobs Turn Into Permanent Jobs?

2

Comments

  • My previous job started off as a part time Christmas temp, working Sat & Sun. When I finally left 10 years later I was full time & a Supervisor.
  • Yes, my last permanent role I temped there for 3 months, then went on to a 6 month fixed term contract and then went perm and I stayed for 7 years.

When I was temping last year, I temped at a charity for 9 months and they were going to offer me the role permanently but I didn't want to do it long term - I was happy temping there.

Working in Sainsbury's could lead to other opportunities. Once you've got your foot in the door, there may be other jobs that come up that you could apply for.

I would have thought that at somewhere like Sainsbury's there's quite a bit of staff churn, people coming and going, so if you're able to impress them in your 12 weeks and make it known you'd like to stay you'd have a pretty good chance.

My first ever job was a 6 months contract that got extended to a year then made permanent. Stayed for just over 2 years before being poached by a former supervisor from that company to go and work with her elsewhere.

  • My partner was in the exact same position last year, got a temp contract on checkouts with Tesco.

11 months on, permanent contract and has now been placed on the early stages of the trainee management course.

With hard work and a good attitude, you could expect to be offered something permanent before the end of the 12 weeks...

    Good Luck

in this climate I woulda thought all jobs are 'temp to perm'.

We take on a number of temporary staff every summer, 8 of which became permenant contracts this year as a result of a large long-term contract being secured.

Whilst none of them are full-time (1200 hour/year guarantee, but in reality probably 120h/month for 10 months and 240h/month for the other 2), they're better than being on JSA for the people that have them, even on the basic guarantee.

I currently do contract roles, and previously did a lot of temp work. Sometimes the opposite problem can arise, i.e. diplomatically fending off offers of permanent work that you *don't* want, without giving offence.

So yes, I'd say there's a fair chance you'll end up doing more than 12 weeks for Sainsburys. You could find the role you're going into simply gets extended, or it will end but something else will come up either straightaway or in the future.

As others have suggested, make sure you communicate your interest in permanent work to your manager - enough so they know it, but not so much it starts to seem pushy!

    It can turn permanent OP.

Make sure you talk with your fellow colleagues as they could be asked by the manager what Vanchatron was like. when asked if you can stay on a bit or work some extra hours on another day then say yes but obviously if you have plans made then don't cancel them (well its your choice). If unsure about anything ask questions.

Temp to Perm seen (imho) as a scam by agents, to get extra commission?

-The initial weekly temp %age, and then a cut of any annual salary if taken on as perm?

I missed out on a job, because of a 20% fee the agency wanted from the firm I was temping at, to effectively 'buy them out'
