In an ideal world the college would be 20 mins away and she could work. So what do you suggest that she takes a weekend job and completes homework when?

Shes not going to finish college in an ideal world, so better start getting used to the real world now.

She can do homework and reading on the train both ways, and then weekend part time job or evenings if she gets any early finishes.

I applied for a bursary for my son for 6th form college. As its discretionary I think the college set the criteria - ours was earning under £17500 I think. He gets free meals and £70 a month plus he gets free bus pass anyway and all books etc paid for. I would just apply and hope they dont lower the figure. After all the tax credits reduction in threahold has been delayed now.

    thank you :)

particular course? well maybe she could do bricklaying or hairdressing as she can walk to that!! unfortunately the textiles course she wants to attend is 36 miles away (same college different campus) as for getting a job, as she will have to catch a train at 6:45 in the morning for the train to arrive just after 8am then she has a 25 min walk, attends a day at college then due to the ridiculous connections has a 1:45 train journey home after the 25 min walk to the station... yeah sure i will let her get up to do a round at 5am or maybe she will get home at 6pm and do it then...she might have time for food if she takes it with her...

My daugther attends college. She leaves at 7am every weekday and does not get home until 5.15pm. the college is 1 hour from home. She works 10-6 on a saturday and 10-4 on a sunday, She completes her homework during the 9 hours a week study periods she gets at college and in the evenings. Its can be done, you sound very pessimistic.

Does she use this to pay to get her to and from college?

Far from a pessimist, she is not due to start until Sept 16, i have no idea of the length of the college day so the times are estimate, i have no idea of what study periods if any she will get, or the amount of homework she will get. she cannot even look for a job at the moment as she is only 15 so no one will employ her (we even had issues with work placement from school because of this with some companies)I am not going to rely upon her to get a job to enable her to pay towards her travel either. , I was only asking a question about the tax credit threshold i did not ask for advice on all the other comments i seem to have received.

With almost a year to go I wouldn't sweat it, she'll probably want to do something else by then.

    NB
College courses are rarely full time as an adult understands the concept - she'll quite probably only need to be there for around 3 days a week, leaving her plenty of time for study and work.

It's a public forum so you can't control replies.

Nothing wrong with posters suggesting other routes to be helpful or if they don't know the answer to your main query.

For what it's worth using child related benefits for this purpose is exactly the kind of situation they are given for and it's more than reasonable to suggest this.

Actually, when you posted this -
... i do not think that any child should have to pay for transport to school/college if it is a legal requirement to attend especially when there is no nearer option.

You must have at least expected some comments?

Is £120 the cheapest fayre you've found? Our county do a daily/weekly/monthly unlimited bus/train/tram use pass that works out loads cheaper. It can work out more awkward when you cross counties though.

We have to take this into account with where our son is thinking of studying, he is the same age. Though there's a subsidised bus service from our village, if his timetable means he is finished a lot earlier in the day, am considering getting him a 16-25 railcard so he can catch the train home instead. The times and price sdon't work out for him to use this as a method to travel there though.
