Despite being one of the most rapacious PPCs out there, they are better than most at dealing sensibly with genuine, with proof, on-site spenders.
This isn't PE being big hearted & caring it's because their employers have it written in the contract that when 'genuine customers' produce receipts the charge is cancelled.

It must be somewhere in their pre-contract discussions/checklist with potential 'employers'. I can't imagine it's the 'employers' who proactively seek out this dispensation - there are precious few other PPCs who respond positively to receipts, presumably because it was never discussed at pre-contract stage (or if it was, the PPC was able to sidestep it).

I had this discussion with a manager of my local M&S yesterday. My lovely cousin wanted me to drop her off while I went to Staples in a different part of town but I said I would get a love letter from PE if I did that due to their "no return within 1 hour" rule. So, I mentioned this in M&S and the manager said it was written into the shop lease/contract that managers of all the shops in the retail outlet could cancel tickets.
Good to know but he agreed it was off putting for customers who wanted to come back to pick up something else, or a different driver used the same car.

All the employees cars were on a white list as well.

I told a few tales of how "nice" PE are, mentioning double dipping, signs like the one at the car park entrance that is at right angles to the approach road so can't be read from a moving car amongst other things.
He was surprised to say the least.

Sweet ignorance, hear no, see no, speak no evil - unless they get sustained complaints.

Why is the Great British public so reticent in venting their spleen?

A word of warning if you do decide to pay... I (probably foolishly) decided to pay the £40 fine for overstaying my welcome in a car park associated with ALDI. Their online transactions kept prompting pop-ups tsaying that the payments had been unsuccessful (tried twice) so I ended up paying by telephone.

In checking my bank account a couple of weeks after, I noticed that THREE payments of £40 each were withdrawn by PArkingEye so the online transactions HAD been successful which meant that I had paid £80 more than I should have done.

Since writing to both ALDI and ParkingEye about this, I have not had my money refunded despite numerous replies admitting they're at fault and payment will be made - and their timeframes have referenced everything from this week (few weeks back) to "shortly".

When I asked ALDI and ParkingEye if this bug in their online payment system could be leading to numerous people over-paying, ALDI customer services said they'd never had another complaint about it. (Hard to believe.) And ParkingEye has not even replied to my questions. My concern is that there are people who aren't fluent with online transactions who are being stung by ParkingEye for more than one penalty payment but don't even realise it and ParkingEye can ramp up their already dubious profit margins while ALDI accidentally colludes.

I also asked them about their digital transactions system which should be working alongside the telephone payment system to recognise - and prevent - duplicate payments. Again, I have had no reply to this question. And nor have I had a reply to my question about why there seem to be two trading companies for ParkingEye's telephone payment operation compared to the digital one.

To date, over one month since ParkingEye withdrew £120 from my account, I have not received my £80 reimbursement, which ALDI told me would arrive as a cheque - bizarrely, not even through BACS transfer. Since I got onto all of this, I haven't set foot in an ALDI store and I've told them that I won't until it's sorted AND that this ALDI brand experience isn't doing them any favours. (But I kid myself into thinking my few hundred squid will be missed - what do they care?!)

Incidentally, there's a press release on British Parking Association's website you could read - today's take on ParkingEye's defeat at the Supreme Court vis-a-vis a situation just like yours. (PE is on BPA's member list.) Can't post link I'm afraid but that could be helpful.
  • That sounds quite scrupulous THD. Thanks for the info in case I have to pay them. I will be extra careful. Have you complained to your bank. Sometimes, they are better in getting the money back.

Nice one. Have put a call into the bank and they've asked me to put details into an email so see what happens next... Thanks. And good luck with yours.

    If only!!

That was no defeat for PE.

Yep, hastily written and ultimately incorrect but still worth reading if you're thinking of appealing; certainly wasn't a defeat for PE.

Take them to court to get your money back.
