I have so much stuff in the loft/attic. Have you, and when will I get rid?

Hi all,

Just cleared out the garage. Oh my word the things I found out there!

OH has just put good things from the garage into the loft. He said there is so much stuff up here already, what the H is it all?

I don't know!

Did you ever go up there and find out?

Some day I will, but out of sight is out of mind. LOL.

I think it might be a revelation. Did you ever do a clear out of the loft/attic space, and what did you find!

Well we don't have any children sadly, but there ya go, and honestly, the garage (which is big...) has been the repository for all my siblings and in law sibs baby stuff and so on, cots, buggies, baby bikes with stabilisers, etc. etc. All in good condition and has now been despatched to the CC with sibs approval.

What I found was my mother's stuff. She is now in full time care, and of course when her house was rented and cleared out, much of her "stuff" ended up here aswell!!

OH when clearing the garage found Royal Doulton china, figurines, Lladro, Waterford Glass, you name it. I had forgotten it was there! Up to the loft it went, as I am just the custodian of it for now.

But what else is up there I have no idea! Some day it will be fun to find out....
  • So you're not planning on moving any time soon then?:rotfl:

My last house had an attic - very handy it was too (both for storage and so that I could keep an eye from the inside on how my roof was doing).

I would probably have a bit of a clearout there every couple of years or so.

The last one was just before I put that house on the market. That was just as well - as one viewer was viewing the house that thoroughly that they wanted a look up in the loft too - which they duly did.

Must admit I would be glad of having a useable loft in my current house - but that was one of the compromises I had to make when choosing which one to buy:( - ie its a bungalow and the loft is really only capable of access by workmen doing renovation jobs that entail going up there.

We have completely cleared ours now because we had free loft insulation put up there and you cant put anything directly on top of it. The contents then sat down in our living room for about 18 months and eventually, realising it was never going to actually be used again by us, we freecycled it.
It was mainly computers and heaps of games.

Get yourself back up there in 18 months. If you haven't needed the stuff in that time, it's unlikely you'll need it at all.

Drag the whole family up there whilst your at it and give them the last chance to save stuff to take back to their own homes. Everything else should be freecycled / donated to the chaz / thrown out if unusable.

Once it's done you'll feel great! No real logic to it, you just will :)

I'm a terrible hoarder. one of the things that puts me moving house is the thought of having to clear the loft.

thankfully, i can't do ladders and heights therefore my loft is the only clutter free area of my home!! my Dad went up there when i first moved in and found a few leftover tins of paint, they did not match any rooms in the house so we got rid of them, nothing has been put there since!!

It last got cleared out by DD who was searching for Car Boot items to sell. she did well on it too! apparently, old hamster cages were much in demand! as was a knitting machine, a birdcage (and don't ask me how it even GOT in my attic as we have never had a bird and were the first residents in this house!) and motley kitchenalia!

I was in mine yesterday. It's full of suitcases and xmas stuff, and suitcases full of xmas stuff:)

I did bring one box and case down and edited the contents. I don't need it all.

Also there is a wheelchair (my mums), bits of desk, a car seat my children are too big for, my box of wedding paraphernalia, some things belonging to my late DH and some summer clothes.

My plan is to slowly work through it... Hmm...
