Hi all
We are very excited to be buying our first home! Yippee however at present there is no gas meter installed! There is a pipe but no meter, does anyone know the cost of installation and the best tariff we should go on? The house is presently on run on electric, I.e radiators, cooking etc but we are not getting a boiler till we build a much needed extension probably early next year. Anyone have any advice what we should do?

Thanks :D

    wait until nearer the time.

No point paying for a standing charge if you have no use for gas at present

It may not be just a simple meter install. If the meter has been removed for some time they may insist on installing new pipework to the main in the road which could run into several £K. If it is just a meter it would probably be FOC.

If you currently have a dual rate E7 meter then remember that this may have to be switched when you go onto mains gas supply, as it's unlikely that E7 will be suitable.
Costs can vary considerably from a few hundred to several thousand for a new supply from the street.

Contact a gas supplier as soon as you move in, if the meter was removed recently get one reinstalled and pay the standing change as tthat will be cheaper than a new pipe etc.

I think the meter has never been there, just the pipe work which is capped off.

Does the incoming pipe have a valve on it or is it just a capped pipe with no valve?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

If it's just a capped pipe, you'll have to find out if the pipe is live or dead. Wales and West are doing ours, but it will vary depending on where you live.

The OP makes it sound like direct electric heating, so hopefully they are not on E7 at present. Definitely something to check up on though.

I will get the plumber to check the incoming gas main when he is next here. Is economy 7 really bad?
