Clicking on this icon just seems to toggle between the two operating systems.

More than likely you still have 8.1 and were flipping between the 'Metro' interface and the Windows Desktop. It was that lunatic dual interface that made 8.1 near unusable.
He said the problem is with a flaky free Microsoft upgrade.

Oh, dear. Shop keeper sounds a total plonker.

Just checked and yes, what I thought was a Windows 10 interface is in fact the Metro interface of Window 8.

So, a straightforward fail of the Windows 10 upgrade and not a case of 2 operating systems.

    Thanks very much

I do know that you techies would have done it so differently but us non techies just opt for an option that seems safe and have to put up with paying accordingly. Annoying but c'est la vie :o

Ah, fair point. I always forget how much you'd be charged if you went to a PC shop for upgrades... and how bad the service would be!

If the data on your old laptop is important, do you have backups? Definitely worth investing in an external drive, if not.

Hmm, maybe. IMHO you just applied all the patches to 8.1

If you get the laptop back with a fresh install of Windows 8 I would suggest that you do all the outstanding MS updates to that version first and only when you are sure they are all properly installed and working do the upgrade to 10, if you want to take that step at all.

I think you are worrying unnecessarily about MS forcing users to upgrade, they might encourage but given the number of people still using versions back to XP (and possibly even earlier) I don't think they'll be coming to your house and insisting you do it - although you may want to turn off automatic updates to ensure you are in control of what you do install.

Don't feel bad about paying out for the second laptop. I always tell people it's good to have more than one machine, for the simple reason if you only have the one, you're a bit stuffed if something goes wrong with it.

Also don't feel too bad about the failed upgrade - you're by no means the only one. Hopefully it'll come back from the shop all upgraded and you can tell us all what you think of Windows 10!

An update for all you kind people who replied :A

I have spoken suggested that I was actually toggling between Metro and Windows interfaces just in Windows 8. SPOT ON! You were dead right :o

Thank you to Grumpy Crab who offered to assist in my hour of need.

I decided to try again with the Windows 10 upgrade. Took me till the early hours but it did upgrade this time. :j

So, I did not have to return to the shop this morning for a factory reinstall.

The only down side is that I do not have a system restore disc but fingers crossed will not need one. I have gone into System Protection and turned this one to create system Restore Points.

Do I like it? At first no! But I have spent all day tweaking it and it now seems pretty OK? Looked at numerous websites offering "The first 10 things to do after upgrading to W10" and followed many of the suggestions.

Most importantly (for me) I have downloaded Microsoft Money Sunset Deluxe AND imported my data and touchwood at this stage it looks to be working. :j
I will run in parallel on the new and old laptops for a week or so to ensure no hiccups or glitches. I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I am about this.

Just my family tree software to attempt to move over but I suspect this will be more problematic as it seems that although the software downloads, an activation code is required and the ones originally used are no longer valid.
But, all is not lost, I can retain the old laptop as a dedicated family history laptop.

I am sure there will be further hiccups but feel that my main hurdles have been overcome.

Thank you Thank you Thank you

Well done for perservering. It sounds like you've saved yourself a lot of time, trouble and confusing conversations by not having to involve the shop.

I don't know Family Tree Maker, but just did a quick Google and an initial scan seemed to show some claiming to be using it OK on W10, and others not.

Well done for getting it sorted.

Can I ask what version of money you were running and how did you import the data? I tried Money Sunset (on W7) but it would not convert file so currently running Microsoft Money 2005 v14.

Not sure if/when I'll try W10 but nice to be forearmed with info.
