Is your year nine, about 13 or 14yrs? My 13yr old works 4hours on a Saturday morning, and she buys her own school uniform and most of her other clothes, because she doesn't like it when I buy sensible shoes and regulation uniform. It's her idea of a compromise.

TVT, that's great ! And those items must mean more to her as she put the effort in. I think girls appreciate independence more than boys. Yes - He's just turned 13, we have more than suggested and gently pushed him to the idea of getting a Saturday job at the beginning of the holidays. I think on his return to school I will introduce the idea along the lines of - you have to. The paperboy jobs have waiting lists as long as your arm. Skittles is big round here so 'Putting Up' is a favourite money earner.

I have resisted one purchase today, 30p paperback book in charity shop ! Only in there because it's part of my works building, promised myself I'll buy it on Thursday if I go the whole week.

Thanks for your good wishes all.

Hi frugal, we don't even have a paper round in the village where we live, and I don't even know what is putting up:confused:. I must admit it depends on what's available around your area. I've been very lucky, 3 of my girls have all worked in the local hairdresser, and she has been very pleased with their standard of work, so she's been quite keen to take each on as they reached 13. When they get sick of the hairdresser they can move on to the local shop, he's always looking for staff. If you have a cooperative close to you, they're usually looking for shelf stackers on a saturday. I started in the coop myself when I was only 12, but that wasn't yesterday:rotfl:

  • I think you should be able to manage your challenge if you have plenty of food, petrol and don't need uniform.

Definitely don't buy a coat for your son. My 12 year old son wears the same clothes summer and winter: school shirt, blazer and trousers. He refuses to wear the school jumper as he said he doesn't like it, and doesn't like dragging a coat around school, so refuses to wear one of those either! At least he is saving me money.

Good luck with your challenge. You achieve more if you push yourself.

    Morning all
    That's day 1 over :T .

TVT - It's brilliant that you are teaching them at such an early age, I had 3 jobs at 16, washing up in the pub (but then my Mum and Dad owned it) baby sitting and worked Saturdays in a local grocery shop. Why this hasn't translated to my eldest I don't know.
Just to clarify - Putting Up - In local pubs here in Dorset they take their Skittles seriously, so need a someone to 'put up' the skittles when they've been knocked down ! Apparently it's quite lucrative as both teams give good tips after much local beer. Do have a co-op so may well ask as to be honest I don't know the age restrictions anymore. Thanks for advice :)

Hairy - same scenario here, same uniform all year, however his school adopted the polo shirt/sweatshirt style some years ago so no worries about ties and blazers. As long as his trousers aren't half mast pretty sure I can get away with it for another 6 weeks as I have been given a load from a friend.

    Feeling good about the week.

Just made an MSE DFW decision. Found library card, off to library after housework, no need to spend 30p on desired pb when I can get it for free :)

Day 2 - :T completed, cash free day. I did spend a very selfish hour at the library, choosing some bestsellers I've missed out on.
Can see this is becoming really addictive.

Re getting 13 year old out to work. Asked neighbour who works at the co-op if they take 13 year ols on and no joy. So skittles is the next attempt.

Today will be a test, kids want to go to a carboot, then there is a local funday at the beach, but they do have their own money, bank of Mum not required.

Think we will run out of dog food by Tuesday, so I may have to spend something.

  • Hi Jo

I've enjoyed reading your thread and wish you loads of luck. It all reminded me of when my boy was at high school and how he wouldn't take his coat!
