There was a very similar scenario on a programme recently - secrets of the scammers I think it was called. Lady lost £46k, pretty sure she never got it back. It's quite a clever scam. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

Firstly, there does not appear to have been any bank fraud. You paid the money to the bank account details provided in the e-mails.
What was this deposit for exactly? If you were taking out the lease on a shop (owned by the council?) I have never heard of a lease being arranged by e-mail. Was no solicitor involved? How did you sign the lease .... electronically? Never heard of such a thing.
What has the councils reaction been to all this ... having their e-mails apparently intercepted and amended then forwarded on to you. Very odd situation.0
