Turkish airlines delayed flight

Hi
There was a group of 5 of us. Flight from Cairo to London via Istanbul
The flight from Cairo to Istanbul was delayed in departing, they said they would ensure that we do not miss our connection flight. All passengers to the US and other destinations including us going to London were delayed.
Our flight from Istanbul to London was missed and we waited 7 hours for the next flight. I wrote in to Turkish Airlines and they replied saying that Cairo is not in Europe, Istanbul si not in Europe and as such they cannot offer any compensation.
Is this right?
Do we have the right to any compensation?
Thanks

2.1 b of Vauban's guide
b) You were departing an EU airport on any airline, or were flying into an EU airport on an EU carrier (for the purposes of the Regulation, this also includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland)?
so non-EU airline on non-EU to non-EU is not covered by EU2610 -
So I am not entitled to any compensation?
Thanks0 -

not under EU261
You could see if your travel insurance gives anything for the length of the delay although many are pretty poor...eg £20 for each 12 hours0 -
I only have travel Ins with the bank and only 3 of us are covered, so I guess that I won't get much. Maybe I will just leave it at that.
Thanks anyway!0
