The DVLA is lying when it says it makes a loss on supplying this data, the figures are smoke-and-mirrors. The DVLA doesn't want to be seen to be profiting so it fiddles the figures and pretends to be making a loss.
And what incentive has an executive agency of government got to do that?0 -
Hmmm, lemme see.
- Faking timestamps to make it look like people overstayed when they hadn't;
- Issuing charges for overstays to people who actually visited twice, and refusing to cancel them;
- Issuing camera-generated tickets to motorcycles, even though this is impossible because they only have a rear number plate (they present the daylight photo of the rear number plate as the "in" photo, and an infra-red photo from a later visit as the "out" photo; because only the number plate is visible in the IR photo, you can't see that it's the rear of the vehicle again);
- Ticketing people for overstays when they were actually stuck in congestion trying to leave the car park;
- Ticketing people for overstays when they actually spent 30 minutes driving around looking for a space;
- Ticketing people for overstays at motorway services when the "in" and "out" photos are on opposite carriageways!
- Ticketing people who simply drove past the car park, or parked in an adjacent car park;
- Ticketing cars parked on the public highway.
And many, many more sharp practices, all part of the daily routine in PPC-land.
Yeah and those people need help.
The vast majority just want to get out of the ticket handed out for their own stupidity or carelessness.What will your verse be?

Good grief, do I have to spell everything out? It's a stealth tax, obviously, but if they admitted they make a profit from it the stealth would be gone.
Effectively every time a motorist pays a PPC he is paying this stealth tax. Unfortunately he is also effectively paying a huge commission to the DVLA's collection agent, the PPC, but the DVLA couldn't care less about that so long as it maintains its hidden funding stream.
The DVLA is becoming increasingly expert at levying stealth taxes: charges for forgetting to SORN, the new wheeze of double-charging VED for a month when a vehicle changes hands, and on and on and on. You've got to take your hat off to their eye for innovation.Je suis Charlie.0 -
Most of the posters on here seem to have been caught out by misleading terms (like not noticing a maximum time on the poor signage, parking outside a closed shop) or petty/sharp practice (like having a ticket slip, not having their BB displayed, or not being in an actual space).
Very few of them seem to have deliberately broken the rules.0 -

Of course they're going to say that. Who would want to help someone who is deliberately flouting parking rules?
I've seen poor signage once or twice but never been caught out!What will your verse be?

You are a very naive person.
Barry Beavis got a ticket because he was in Staples getting a whole stack of printing/copying done when the machine broke, so he had to wait for it to be fixed. What was he supposed to do? Leave, drive round the block and come back? Nope, because PE signs usually forbid returning within so many hours. His only option would've been to leave and come back hours later or the next day (by which time his half-finished print job would probably have been lost or thrown away).
Do you seriously think that's an acceptable way to treat genuine customers of a retailer?
This is the nub of the problem: there is no common sense in this racket, no rationality, no appreciation for the needs of genuine customers or indeed retailers: the PPC's couldn't give a ****, they just want your money come what may.
ParkingEye has it written into many of its contracts (e.g. Aldi) that they - PE - can set the "free" parking allowance, so if they are not raking in enough from a site they can reduce the time allowed in order to boost their income!
And what about the "guess on exit" systems at many hospitals? The technology obviously "knows" what time you entered (unless the cameras have screwed up as they so often do), so when you come to pay you could easily be informed on the screen of how long you've been there and what you need to pay. But no, that's not how they work: you have to try to remember (or guess) when you arrived in order to pay the correct sum. Why? Because that way they can make money out of people's mistakes - especially when those people may be rushing to a hospital in circumstances where making a note of their arrival time is the last thing on their minds.Je suis Charlie.0 -

Again you're pointing out the ones who do need help. Although Barry presumably knew how long he had and chose not to go back to his car in time so has nobody but himself to blame. Whether or not it's a good way to treat customers is not the issue here. It's whether the rules are clearly displayed. Barry, as far as I'm aware, never said he didn't know what the rules were or how long he had.
The fact is there are many others who just don't care about getting back on time.

Oh what's the point? If you are here simply to parade your clever-dickery and tell us how perfect you are then into my ignore list you go.Je suis Charlie.0

If only everyone was perfect like you.
I'm not saying I'm perfect. I just think this is one of those things that's a mountain made out of a mole hill. It's not hard to park and not get a ticket. It can be done with very little effort or thought.
The image doctoring scandal is awful but only affects a few people. The majority of people have in some way made a mistake with regards how long they stay or whatever.What will your verse be?
