New gas meter reading is HUGE...
Hi everyone.
I'm a little confused and worried about the gas reading we currently have.
Bought a house and had meters changed from prepaid on Thursday (29th Oct). Didn't bother looking at the new ones as it was someone else that was in when it was done, and assumed it'd all be fine. Today (3rd Nov), we went to take meter readings in order to get put on a tarrif.
The Electric meter is fine at 00018 or something. However, the Gas meter reads 07252 (m3) which is absolutely crazy. The problem is the person that fitted the meter has written on it that he left it saying 99999, and there is no way we have used all that gas which would equal around £3k or something.
We have a Worcester greenstar compact boiler which controls CH & HW. That's the only thing that uses gas. The meter isn't visibly broken or turning fast, so its clearly an error on their part. But how can I prove that should they argue it? Clearly there's no way we could use that amount of gas in 5 or so days, but so far we've had a terrible time with eon, and we don't want to get screwed by them even more.
Thanks!

are you reading the right screenDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Sure here's a pic of it:0

Brand new meters normally come factory fresh with an index of 99999 which then rolls on to 00000 and then 00001 as you use gas. Sometimes they push out recycled/recon meters like yours. Note the date..2006.
The guy probably had it stuck in his mind that it was new so just noted 99999. The REAL question is, what reading did he record to your gas supplier? Was it 99999, 00000 or 07252? you need to speak to your supplier..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
We managed to speak to someone at eon before they closed (was on hold for 45min!). They have the reading at 99999...0

If you speak to them again, they can probably deem a correct opening read, might need you to take a few reads over a number of days or see if they can check the engineer notes, definitely a reconditioned meter0

Good morning noxas and welcome,
Some great advise here, thank you.
As has been said, the gas meter isn't brand new so wouldn't start on zero, it'll probably have started a few units less than the current read.
I know you've called us already, we can re-estimate a start read if no one else took this. We'll ask you to take a few reads maybe over a couple of weeks and then estimate from there.
There's a team that deal with these things and they can talk you through it and go through the calculations with you.
Don't worry, we can sort this out. I'm not sure what's going on from here, did we offer to re-estimate? Do you need me to help?
If you do need me let me know and I'll get you in touch with the right people.

Hi Helena,
The issue we have is the person that fitted the meter wrote that he left it saying 99999. After getting in touch with Eon yesterday we were told that they have the reading at 99999 also, but because we'd been on hold for so long and also sent to the wrong department, we couldn't do anything to resolve it before they closed.0 -
Old meters in good condition are sometimes used again and they will say start read of 99999. Possibly the fitter has nt put a new sticky label on it and that refers to its original location.Check the date on the label0

Oh I see, I'm so sorry you were on hold for so long.
You can email your account number, name and full address to me if you like.
As sacsquacco says there should also be a label on the meter with the date, read etc can you see this?
