TV license

Options
Hi, I'm a student and paying for my licence quarterly.

Will only be here until may - 6 months, It says I can get a refund as I wont be there all year,

Obviously I wouldn't be refunded anything as I havent paid for it all upfront.

So, whats the crack? Will they just not make me pay anymore after 6 months?

Cheers.

  • Hi!
Really sorry to post this hear but i can't seem to post a thread so having to high jack this thread!

I don't pay for a tv licence because i never ever watch tv and i dont watch catch up either. I soley use my tv for gaming and netflix/dvds only.

I dont reply to the tv licence letters because im worried that if i give them my name and they want to visit me (which isnt a problem) im just worried they will see i have an aerial and assume i watch tv because of it and then take me to court with them having my name.

Someone told me to cut the wire but it isn't mine to cut as i rent the property and you never know, i may want to watch it in future.

Am i doing the right thing by ignoring the letters? So they don't have my name or should i declare i don't need a licence and let them come?

    Cheers! And apologies again ;)

    Don't pay monthly...

Pay quarterly in advance. Make 2 payments to cover 6 months and cancel the direct debit. It will cost you £2.50 more than paying the whole lot in advance and applying for a refund but it's so much less hassle that it's well worth it.

I cancelled mine on Saturday when next payment was going to go out on 1st, advised by Capita to also cancel DD payments which I done. I removed satellite cable (never used) and aerial (rarely used) coiled them both and tided them up with cable ties at back on my tv stand. Also removed and boxed up pvr

Capita said I may get a visit in 2 years time by there Goons ie sales people, but I wont speak to them or confirm who I am nor let them in as I gather they make things up and lie and twist things around

I have netflix, nowtv, bluray player, xbox

It was my understanding that it's not the actual watching of live TV that sparks the need for a licence but rather having an implement capable of watching live TV.

    Your understanding is completely wrong.

If that were true everyone with a smartphone, tablet, laptop/computer, xbox etc etc would be required to have a licence as they can all receive live tv.

Good comment,I just started a thread because a man from the licence department said I had to disconnect my tv so it could not receive live tv, bit pointless as I could watch it live on the computer but as most things are on very soon after its easy to stick to catch up.

That is the line that TVL were trying to push a few years ago, a World Cup year ISTR, and was totally ignored.

From the TV licence site itself
Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003 makes it an offence to install or use a television receiver to watch or record any television programmes as they're being shown on television without a valid TV Licence.
So it is only the act of watching live transmissions or the intent to that creates the offence. How would you prove intent?

I was curious on whether you had to disconnect the cables or detune the channels etc.

    offence to install or use?
