As both box and labels state euro 40 the UK6 could be a misprint and the boot tried on in store may of been stretched by numerous customers trying them on...maybe you did need an 8. This is why it's always advisable to try on the boxed pair before purchase.
If you got them at such a good price maybe look at selling them on and maybe even make a small profit?

EU40 is a UK 6 and a half but is often labelled as a 6, a 7 is usually always labelled a 41.

A 39 is usually a 6/6.5
A 40 is usually anything between a 7 and 8.5.
