Hi
This is my first post and im searching the net looking for some advice. I am looking for someone who knows a bit about leather who could give me some advice.
Here goes, i bought a sofa 7 months ago and it wasnt cheap. One of the seats has what I think a defect that weakens the leather. On a small area it has a slightly different appearance/texture that has starting to get small hair line cracks. There is circular dots that are indented that i noticed when the cracks started to appear. There is far more small cracks to be wear and tear in my opinion, even with a toddler., and it seems to be just one area..
Could you please please please look at my link and give me your opinion to what you think this might be??

thank you, greatly appreciated

Hi I have a black leather suite and after about 6 weeks I noticed that one of the arms of the sofa was peeling, I rang the company up and they sent a specialist to repair it, cant remember what he did, but it has been fine since.
Maybe you could ring the company up and ask their advice.
Good luck!
And forgot to say welcome :hello:

Hard to tell from your photos. Do you still have the documentation that came with the sofa? What kind of leather is it? It could be worth contacting the seller as the previous poster suggested. AFAIK pigmented leather has been painted with the colour so it's important to keep the leather cleaned & well nourished. What do you use on it? Grit, crumbs, feet, jeans rivets etc are all hard on leather sofas. As are pets. My cat sits on the arm of one of our sofas & digs her claws in slightly every time she jumps up. She has left marks very similar to those in your first photo actually...0

Thanks for you replies.
My sofa is getting gradually worse even tough i now have a throw over it. Its only on one small area of the 3-seater that these small cracks are appearing where the appearance and texture seems different.
I have no pets, so it cant be cat scratches.
I have contacted the company whom i purchased it from and they are sending someone out to look at it at the cost to me, hump!
Its only 7 months old and i have taken good care of it. I'll see what the company have to say but I know its not wear and tear.
Thanks again0 -
Hi there
I'm a specialist and it sounds repairable' approx £80-1000 -
You need to talk to the company you bought it from.
If you want legal advice about where you stand contact the AMU who will help you with this.
It is very difficult to say what has caused this without inspecting it close up but unless it is something that has been used to clean it (which you say it isn't) then the shop must deal with it.Lots of knowledge about leather0 -
If it isn't caused by anything you have done, then I would not be expecting to pay for any repair or call out fee. I would dispute this if I were you. 7 months is not a long time as far as furniture is concerned and anyway it should be under guarantee for the first year at least. I think some companies will try this on and if they can get the customer to pay, they will but if you question it they might not insist. Find out your rights as a consumer, it is on this forum somewhere I think. Don't be fobbed off. Good luck.0

As your a specialist can you help, how do they repair splits in the leather?
I have a cream leather sofa and its gone blue from jeans! We noticed the colour change after a few mths, wasnt advised of this when we bought it. Its also split in several places.
When we bought the sofa DFS said it was coated or something to stop it cracking yet its cracked quite bad in one place and its got dirty / dye off jeans in the crack so looks nastyWins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -
You need to use a specialist cleaner for the dye transfer from the jeans, if it not removed quickly it will become permanent and need recolouring. It can be prevented from happening by the use of a good leather protector and cleaning on a regular basis.
The cracking and splitting you would be best having a technician to look at this as it is difficult to say what has caused it and how it can best be treated. If you want to send me some photos I will gladly look at them for you.

we used a specialist cleaner and straight away too, its called safely solvent cleaner and its by liquid leather. we bought if off a company recomended to us by DFS.
On 2 of our cushions dye transfer off jeans is permanent but when they last came out they told us it would need recovering?Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -
It should not need recovering for dye transfer unless it is very bad, the leather can be recoloured to match and these usually restore very well.Lots of knowledge about leather0
