My wife is full Comp on her car,
I have full Comp on mine,
My wife will drives my car no and them –
I was going to add her to my insurance, but was told it makes no difference as she is fully Comp on her car and she will be cover like 3rd party insurance and if I wanted, out someone like my mother who does not have her own insurance ( name driver on my dad insurance)
My insurance does not get reduce that much by have my wife on the car.
Is there a difference between some driving a car that is full Comp and a name driver on a policy?

If you have her as named driver on your policy she effectively has a comprehensive insurance like you on your car if not she only has third party only. If accident is her fault then you're left to fix your own car as third party only cover atleast if she's named driver you can make claim on policy as it would be comprehensive.

Personally I would add each other as named driver on each others policy as this would make life alot easier if anything was to happen.

    Yes.

Just add her to yours and add you to hers. Everyone is Full Comp then.

Not sure what you mean about your Mother though, english needs a little correction.

If you add your wife to your policy then she will have comprehensive cover while driving your car.

If you don't, and if her own policy allows her to drive other cars (many don't), then she will only have 3rd party cover while driving your car. That satisfies the law, but in the event of a fault accident any damage to your car will not be covered.

Check your insurance policies. Some insurance companies are now placing a condition on DOC that it does not cover driving partner's vehicle or other vehicles belonging to the household so you will need named driver

Yeah it's likely that if she does have 3rd party cover on other cars, it'll specifically exclude cars either of you own. It's intended to be for occasional emergency use and not as a way to avoid paying for insurance.

As said, even if covered it's 3rd party only and likely to cause a lot of hassle if she's not in it at the time.

    .
    Not so.

Where does it say "for occasional emergency use" anywhere on the policy?

And why say it's a way to avoid paying for insurance?

When you get DOC cover you do pay for it in with your premium!
  • Hi I have recently brought another car insurance company is asking for proof of no claims discount. Have been told I can only have it on one car ?? is this right. Not sure that I am going to keep old one.

Your NCD can only be used on one policy at a time

Most decent companies will mirror NCD.
  • Mine says,
The policyholder may also drive, with the owner's permission, a motor car not belonging to, or hired, or leased to them or their partner.
    (my bold)

Doesn't say anything about 3rd party (although I have always assumed it is), or frequency of use.
