will try an do short version
we applied for our first DFG nearly 3 years ago ,husband need downstairs wet room and bedroom. told by adaptations officer adaptions couldn't be done due to the living room being too small after adaption, and we needed to go on housing list (we had very little contact input from adaption officer)
bid on 4 bed property and moved hoping bigger house would mean adaption would be done.but no adaption couldn't be done(same adaption officer even less input) then spent 5 month battling housing o.t. who said husband didn't need adaptions we proved he did, knowing that they couldn't be done back on housing list .
bid on property won a bid on house same housing trust ,so same o.t.the o.t.and adaptions officer viewed couldn't agree on where extension went o.t. didn't want it on side of property as it would block off front to back access. back extension small and more expensive so offer of house withdrawn.
bid on another property different housing trust and moved reassessed last august and adaption team came April this year despite husband being classed as priority as husband sleeping on sofa and washing in kitchen unable to go upstairs. 1 and only plans done in jun 15 and adaptions officer(different one this time)noted first draft and his only concern over size of living room left after adaptions.emailed him back stating i had lots of concerns about plans including the size of living room, turning circles that didn't fit structures misssing and that the plans match the plans done at first house Dfg that had been turned down due to that very fact the room left for family of 5 was very small..heard nothing back until August to be told that adaptions officer left.
spent the following next 10 weeks chasing up to find out who my new adaption officer was.finally given senior adaptions officer, he then came out to measure my house as it had been mis measured told it would take 3 weeks for new re tweaked plans. Then i got his boss involved as no plans done
I had meeting in October with senior adaption officer his boss o.t. and housing officer from housing trust both adaptions officer and housing say current plans fine still had not been corrected.when i bought up previous DFG stated that was nearly 3 years ago
also said husband needs to be reassessed by o.t. on mobility husband currently uses rollator good day and wheelchair bad days current plans have turning circles in them that don't fit and adaptions are saying doesn't need turning circles as not permanent wheelchair user.outcome plans to be re tweaked 1 plan without circle and 2nd with turning circles that fit due to the mis measurements
both plans would mean we loose over half my living room the part my dining table is now. there is nowhere else to have dining table. we stand by plans are not fit for purpose as we would all be squashed into very small room.with no room for husbands daily needs.husband needs wheelchair or rollator he sits high back chair, all this will not fit in front room after adaptions no place for us to eat as family total of 5 people, no place for children to do homework etc.
as I say this is short version, long approx 16 pages of mistakes delays etc (have another meeting in November with council about previous DFGs )
we did suggested alternate plans
1 extension across back of house
2 wet room in living room as it takes less space.
This was meet with they will only fund an amount up to there preferred plans ie £26000 and we would have to cover rest so if our plans cost £33000=£7000 difference we cannot afford that kind of money but also believe there plans are suitable for husband and families needs. Also that we went that route we would have to wait until next financial as housing trust might not have anything in there pot they contribute 40% to all DFGs (but would for adaptions plans ) and it would be 40% of amount set by adaptions so £26000 currently awaiting the new plans and reassessment.
Any help advice websites people ect anybody been through this ?

Please can you edit with some paragraphs and punctuation? It's very difficult to follow.0

That's very long post and extremely difficult to read without punctuation. I agree that a re-post editing to add paragraphs and punctution would be helpful....0

It might have been a better idea to look for a bungalow rather than a house , We had a new hand rail put up but even that took over a year for them to sort out. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Is it just the living room that the plans enroach on?
Basically in the circumstances you describe (husband sleeping on the setee and washing in the kitchen sink) where you put your table is inconsequential. Your husband is sleeping on a couch and you're criticising the council for wanting to take up a bit of living room space to give him a bit of dignity?
DFGs are a nightmare and the budget is shot, if the council have a workable solution at £26,000 then they will go with that before granting you an extra £7,000 that could go to someone else.
Your only means of appeal is if it enroaches so much on your living room space that there's no longer space for the family to sit on conventional living room furniture.
As for where to eat, either buy trays or set up a table in your kitchen, ikea do styles that fold away really small when not in use. The kids can have desks in their room for homework.0 -
Lots of houses don't have a dining room, that doesn't mean those people don't eat or complete homework.
When my wife became disabled using a grant the living room was adapted so it had a wetroon with hoist and the rest was her bedroom. I found her comfort and dignity far more important than a lump of wood to stick a few plates on.0 -
hi sorry not sure edited addition is any better, due to my dyslexia but will tried. Maybe didn't explain situation well.we are a family of 5,3 adults 2 children. the space left would be 2.6m long x 3.8 approx wide (widest point)This isn't about not having dining space but is a problem one of many.Plans the same a first Dfg if turned down then why are they o.k.now (would never of moved from first house) our family home.
Plans with wheelchair turning circles, would mean that plans would encroach on kitchen,as kitchen wall would need to be moved.
Original plans only included single bed and single bedroom. So will lose more of living room when they redo plans to accommodate double bedroom.
Really don't want to move again, having moved twice already and 3 bed bungalow in social housing in our area are literal none (plus if we went back on housing list due to children's ages we would be classed as needing 4 bedroom.)
This is about getting what husband needs, while balancing needs of family.0 -
