  • My phone is an android phone. I tether sometimes on my Virgin sim if our Virgin broadband is down. Would that have the effect you describe with a 3 sim? I
I'm pretty sure I've tethered in the past with a 3 sim on holiday

I think there was a bit of a rethink from three - older contracts such as those mentioned above 4-5 years old did not have tethering caps, all current ones do. Unlimited traffic from the phone handset, but capped when tethered, and the SIMs do not work in dongles.

Instead, data-only SIMs are more common. Three do a 20GB one for £23 (monthly prices) iD do the equivalent deal for £20 (monthly rolling also). EE want £30 for 25GB, not sure if that's long or monthly contract though.

iD use the Three network, but Three have indicated that thy prioritise Three traffic if a cell is getting full. That said, at a month's notice, just switch if it isn't working out for you with iD

One question. Do you really need to tether?

My internet was down for a couple of weeks and I used my 3 Sim only plan (Unlimited Data with 4Gb Tethering) to download without tethering to a PC.

250Gb later i've still got 3.5Gb left. The 500Mb was due to having to tether to my PC to update it and a few annoying websites.

    or....
Pick up a really old cheap android phone (I've got an old one running gingerbread but any phone with an android version earlier than KitKat will do!) that I just use a data Access point when out an about. it's a pain swapping sims though

Android versions earlier then KitKat do not have the "tethering monitor" flags in the OS.
