Ive certainly pretty much decided on the Fuji s9600

I called them and asked about the image stabilization thing and they said " it has picture stabilisation"

can anyone confirm whether they are one adn the same, similar, or what the differences are?

According to the review link posted above it does not have image stabilization.

I told you it doesn't have it. All is does is raise the iso, like putting high speed film in a film camera. So it can use a faster shutter speed to freeze the image, but because the iso is higher the picture quality is grainier.

Basically it is not a good idea to buy a digital camera until you understand all of the items in the detailed specification.

Fair enough asking but the best way is to learn about the subject and then make your own decision, as different users will have different views. i.e. I wouldn't buy a Fuji, I prefer Canon/Olympus cameras.

    I agree.

I just cant find anything I dont think within budget, to the right spec.

I just spoke to them at fuji again, they say no they dont have image stabilisation. No fujis do at all. However, they said, that this is more useful for the video section, as picture stabilisation is more useful for stills.

now i know they are salespeople at the end of the day, as is everyone :(

Looks like im going to go to jessops and see what they reckon - tihs is very frustrating and need to get it really by the end of the week so I have a couple of weeks to get used to it before we leave.

I guess it depends how far the animals you'll be shooting as to what you'll need. My friend got back last Thursday from a safari, and he only took a little point and shoot digital camera.

The more dominant animals (like the lions) came within 5 metres of the 4x4 so they got plenty of good photos. The trickier animals to shoot were zebra, hippos etc... where you really need a decent telephoto lens.

If you are going to be zooming in on something, I'd recommend some sort of image stabilisation. You'll be more likely to get a sharper image.

I'm not so sure about the Fuji either. I voted for the Canon, it's a good choice, gets very good reviews. You could always spend a little more and get a dSLR, maybe a second hand EOS 350D, or a new D40 (have seen them for under £250).
