password protected secondhand computer

Options
Just bought a desktop (from a school that has since dissolved). The Windows has a password on and I cannot get past it. Any tips please as I am stuck.

  • Does the password come up before the computer has booted (i.e. is a hardware password) or when Windows has booted?

  • ok , the reason its password protected is that its got sensitive data on it (or could have) so I won,t help you crack the password , I and others will assist in helping you reload a new operating system tho

please can you tell us the make/model and also which version of windows

I did not bother asking that question as the OP said password on windows , however I will await their reply

OK so its possible to load a new Windows. We just want to be able to use the computer and already have 4 Windows licences on CD. The version is 7. make Hanns G?

  • hanns g is a monitor (says so on my screen?)

boot from cd , using the correct cd/dvd and enter the ser no on the computer case when asked , probably 32 bit , but check if home/starter/professional etc

can,t remember but I think you can load 7 without ser no , then add it afterwards
