  • well , just make sure both cars have towing eyes (usually in the boot with the spare) , I move a lot of older classic cars , quickly this way , if no towing eye on an older car , bumper irons and string work!

Excellent idea Freddy - now why didn't I think of that?

Sorry to wee on your chips but i think you can use one of those if the car is otherwise insured.

Was just about to post the same thing - if the car isnt insured then as far as I am aware it has to be on a trailer. If it's own wheels touch the ground then it must be taxed and insured.
  • yes , the car that is being towed must have 3rd party insurance on it , no insurance = use a full trailer

Thanks all - I believe it has MOT (must check), so really we either need to tow it with mine (hmm it's a Fiesta not sure that would work) or get someone else to. I'll ask my garage, though need to make sure my son will pay! (He's 24 by the way not a dependent 17 yo).

Otherwise, it will have to stay where it is until he passes his test, which hopefully will be soon!

And i dont think you could use an ordinary car with a trailer to do it with, the towing weights would be wrong?

There's a problem with that - its MAM (as a trailer) will be over 750kg, so it needs (operational) brakes on all wheels.

Book MOT (doesn't need to be half-way, just use your normal station if you have one) and day insurance is perfectly legit. has the added bonus of putting a full MOT on it if it passes, and highlighting any problems if it doesn't.
  • or day insurance book an MOT , but break down outside your house , and cancel the MOT
