Need help in getting internet deals please!

Options
Hi everyone, hope you're well.
I've started this topic because I've never had internet at home and don't know where to start really, I've been researching packages and stuff but don't want to commit yet as want to get a) the best deal and b) the best internet.

I have an Xbox One which I can use for access when I get internet and, mainly, what I want it for is to watch WWE Network which is a streaming service as opposed to download.

I just don't know if Broadband would be enough or if I'll have to go down the Fibre Optic route which, as I've seen, is more expensive.

Also really do not want/need a phone line but I know it's unavoidable.

Please help me Money Savers! :rotfl: :D

Anything above 6mb would usually be fine for streaming. However you need to find out what's available to you and what estimated speed you might achieve.

So go here first and find out what's available at your exchange.

Report back once you have a look at what's available.

If adsl BB then yes you do need a phone line. You can get Virgin BB without a phone line but it costs almost the same as with a phone line but there is a small saving.
  • Thanks jem16!

I had a look and this is what I have available

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    BT FTTC
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Sky Broadband

I have no idea what it all means but looks like I have many options!
    Or does it? Ha

    Maybe not.

There's a tab on the left saying LLU - what providers are available there? Is it only Bulldog and TalkTalk or is Sky available under LLU?

Doesn't mention Virgin so I take it that's not available.

Failing that you're stuck with providers that use the BT exchange.

Have a look at uSwitch - might give you some starting points but there are some providers who are not on that.
  • Ok, so I have three options apparently.

    C&W
    TalkTalk (CPW)
    Sky Broadband

Wanted to avoid Sky really because I've heard such bad things about them like raising prices without notification and very hard to leave?
  • You should also have something like this in the samknows results:

    • ADSL is available in your area
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support
    up to 1Mbps via ADSL
3.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
    4Mbps or greater via ADSL2+

What speeds does it say the different ADSL types will support - this will give you an idea whether you can stream video, or will need to consider FTTC ("fibre")

If you think Sky are bad and i moved away from O2 when Sky took them over so agree on that one, but TalkTalk are probably worse.. I moved away from AOL when TT took them over.

TT were awful, my wireless router had the wrong coloured wire???
Odd how it worked for almost 6 years and only started having issues when they switched to the TT network.

I moved to O2 with no troubles, except a phone call one day to say yes its unlimited but 300GB in less than 15 days of the month is taking the P. :)

Had no issues with Plusnet on Fibre (600 GB) one month and no emails or calls...

  • Ooo I've been looking at Plusnet actually funny you should mention!

I've seen a new company "Fuel", anybody heard of them because I haven't!
Got nothing but praise on FaceBook with comment after comment from "satisfied" customers.
    Don't know, could be fake?

Anyway, I'll look at Plusnet again, just a shame I missed Martins deal on it that expired on the 27th :(

Fuel was formerly known as Primus, and while often promoted on MSE as cheap a few years back, it was anything but cheerful-dire customer service reported. Please don't base your choice on what a few people on Facebook say-most of whom are probably Fuel employees.
If price is the priority, then TT are probably going to be top of your list, present developments excepted-we can expect some heavy discounting from them once the bugs have been ironed out.
If you don't want LLU, then PN are the obvious choice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
