Yes it does all add up now.
I cant believe that that money has been carried over so many times.

I have had numerous conversations with HMRC over my tax situatuion over the last 5 or 6 yrs.
The last one was last year, and thinking about it, it was when I got my end of year payslips. (I dont think I got my p60 til about May, and I was living in my old place when I called them)

At one point I was on self assessment, which I think I stopped in 2009.
But each time I called they isssued a new tax code and there were other random ones throughout.
And why in the world give me a figure of £695 when it was only a tiny proportion of what was owed? (I am sure that was because they couldnt take all money owed out of my PAYE, so I paid that amount and the rest was supposed to be from salary.)

I know its up to me to ensure I pay the right amount of tax but HMRC really hasn't helped much. It is very frustrating.
I will bite the bullet and call them.

    Or should I write?

More than likely. However which tax year did they tell you the underpayment would be taken from?

What are your figures for tax year 2014/15?

What are your tax codes this tax year?

I really don't remember which tax year they said they would take it out, but I think it was meant to be 2014/15. However, the conversation I had with them last year was only about the 1k underpayment for 13/14, and there should have been a tax code adjustment following this.

Job 1 £49621 Tax paid 9303 Final tax code 1042L
Job 2 £11009 Tax paid 4403 Final tax code D0
    Current tax code 1102L

Well whatever is going on your tax codes are not taking any underpayment. In fact you actually have an allowance of £420 on your main tax code - do you know what this is for?

Most of your underpayments have come about as there has been too little tax being taken on the 2nd income. In most cases 40% tax would have been better.

However you now need to get a hold of what is going on and I would suggest that phone calls don't seem to be the way forward. You have said that you have contacted them on several occasions so I would advise putting in an official complaint over how it's been handled.

    Start by following this guidance.

Why is the tax code on your full time job for the current year so high?

Do you have a uniform allowance or something of the sort?

Yes, I have an allowance for professional subscription and laundry allowance.
    It comes to £420

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me.
I will sit down and read the guidance on making a complaint.

Mind you, I'll still owe money, but I might be able to delay payment!
At least I know where I am at now.

    I've composed a letter.
Can you see if this makes sense:

    To whom it may concern.
Complaint: regarding a large tax underpayment, despite many phone calls to the tax office to adjust my tax code.

I am writing to you with reference to the P800 notice recently received for a sum exceeding £3300

The notice on the letter is :
"An underpayment for an earlier year was included in your PAYE code but the actual amount underpaid for that year was higher. This calculation includes an underpayment for an earlier year."

I work 2 jobs, one is a full time position, with X, since June 2014 and a bank position with X ,( where I work 1-2 shifts per month on average)
I have had multiple conversations with HMRC in the past due to underpayment, and various adjustments to my tax code following these conversations.

I have attached the variety of p2 forms I have managed to find in relation to my tax affairs.
    I have found the p800 for tax year 12/13 : underpayment 3190.2
I found a coding notice from 12 Feb 2013 , advising me that my tax code was 112L for 2013/14
I also found a p800 for 11/12 : underpayment 1838.40 (which looks like it was carried over to the next p800)

I have multiple tax coding notices prior to this- lots of K codes.

On 14th Jan 2014, I received a confirmation of a payment schedule for £695.30 (which was owed from 12/13) I was assured that the remainder would be reclaimed from PAYE. (Clearly it was not)

I phoned the tax office early in 2014 because I had noticed an underpayment of 800-900 for the tax year 2013-2014, and was concerned. I was told not to worry, the tax code would be adjusted and they would reclaim the underpayment from salary in my main job .

I received a couple of updated tax code notifications and didn't think anything else of it.
My bank position tax code was then update were paid at 40% tax (D0)so I thought it was back on track.

I've checked my end of year payslips for 2014/15 and tax paid looks ok. (Although clearly now it's wrong, as it should have accounted for the previous underpayment , if it had been adjusted as I thought) I had a slightly confusing year as I changed jobs with a salary increase in June 2014, so a bit harder for me to notice a mistake.

I have no objection to paying whatever tax is owed, but I just can't understand how HMRC has allowed it to carry on and let it increase for such a long period.

I am unable to pay £3k+ by November 20th as requested, and I really can't afford to have such a large amount removed from my monthly salary at PAYE. (I think that's not possible anyway due to the amount owed.)

I'm just coming to the end of a Debt management plan (May 1st 2016 is final payment) which I have been paying for 8 years and it has been very very difficult.
I am very distressed by this added debt, especially as I have tried to ensure that everything was on track.

I would like an explanation how this has occurred, and some information on what you are going to do now.
