Night sweats are a symptom of the menopause and I used to know a lady who began hers in her early thirties.

Or perimenopause, or a hormone imbalance.

For anyone struggling with this, Dr Marion Gluck is a specialist in hormone imbalance. Her book is well worth reading if her consultation prices are prohibitive.

For those that have been offered hormone level testing, be sure to ask your GP what they have tested for and whether they actually understand the results - few have that level of specialist knowledge.

A friend of mine who is menopausal found that night sweats reduced considerably when she changed her diet and reduced the amount of carbohydrates she eats. If she slips off the wagon and eats more carbs the night sweats return.

    Hope this helps somebody.

Well if that's the case I must be having one of the longest menopause known- mine started after my first bout of anorexia as a teenager and I'm now in my 30s, having relapsed a few times since and still with the night sweats with the exceptions being where I was at a low weight (lower than BMI 16 healthy) and then and only then did they stop. (And I still had periods at a low weight and even at a far lower emaciated weight!) I don't think mine are due to the menopause!

Thanks- I did wonder if mine were due to any food at all, possibly an anorexic type thought (I'm never sure what is me and what is me being unhealthy). I did already cut out carbs (bread, pasta, rice...etc and many types of fruit) a few years ago, but still have them so am not sure mine are due to carbs. I am battling with the idea that it's food in it's entirety and I just need to not eat at all, I'm too old and have had too much experience to give that thought any credit but it can feel very hard knowing the only times I've been able to prevent the night sweats is when my weight was sub-healthy.

Hi Jennie wb in answer to your question, I just told her what had been happening in the last 18months to 2 years and she said such tests are the first step. Unfortunate as I use Yasmin she said tests are unlikely to show anything helpful as my real hormones are being controlled artificially kind of thing. She said next step will send me to a dermatologist...if your current surgery is rubbish perhAps consider switching?

Night sweats are on the long list of things which can be caused by food reactions - from Coeliac disease to intolerance.

I've had the same issue for a while - looks like a common thing. I've called my GP to see what we can do.

Sleep naked - apparently you can regulate your body temperature better this way. I've certainly found I have much less of a problem... And less waking up cold in the early hours too.

However, night sweats can be symptoms of other problems e.g sleep apnoea, so should be checked out and taken seriously.

Haha... Mmm I prefer my PJs, and I have tried sleeping in a tiny vest and shorts. Still had the night sweats so I don't think it's clothing or bedding issues. I also note that it's not room temp, I don't have the heating on at all as yet and often have the window slightly open in the flat as I like fresh air so I don't overheat my bedroom/flat.
I should start keeping a diary but mostly the time I seem to wake up from it is 3am ish.
The only thing I can connect mine to is that I used to not really take any exercise apart from walking, now I'm in the gym daily, that's the only thing I can think of that might be connected, in case I don't know, lots of exercise messes up your heat regulation skills or something. It seems unlikely but, I just don't know why it started all of a sudden.
Very odd but I'm glad others have piped up to say they have it too. At least I'm not the only one with these weird goings-on...
