night sweats

I'm female early 30s, suffering nasty night sweats some time now. Started with seemingly no reason and now almost all nights it occurs. I'm going to see the doc about it but anyone had similar experience and got to the bottom of it?

I'm in your age range too- I've had night sweats for many years, they started when I was in my 20s. I've had a history of anorexia and have always put it down to that as it was when I was in recovery I first started experiencing them and being an inpatient at the time it was common place with pretty much everyone else I was admitted with. For everyone else they seemed to stop but for me they really didn't and I hate them!

I hope you get some answers from your Doctor as I've been led to believe they are mostly hormonal but can be due to a range of other things, everything from sleep apnea to pneumonia and the list goes on. My GP didn't do too much and I never really pushed anything because I had so many other issues I needed help with which had been diagnosed that it was the least of my problems! I did go back recently but being the night sweats have been there for over a decade now my GP says they are not harmful and hasn't suggested or offered anything else so I'm sorry but I don't have any conclusive answers for you.

I hope you get more answers than me- if you do want to, please post back as to what happens as I'd be really interested to know.
  • I'm in my late 20's and have been suffering from night sweats for about 5/6 years now. For me it started off as a side effect of medication I was taking - I stopped taking the medication years ago but the sweats never stopped. I think some chemical or hormonal issue must have been triggered and has never gone away again.
I've never been to the doctor about this as I don't know what they would be able to do for me, but I'd be very interested to hear what the doctor says to you and if they suggest any possible solutions.
I find sleeping in cotton pyjamas, with cotton bedding helps a little - it doesn't stop the sweats but does 'breathe' a bit more. I often have to change pyjamas half way through the night because I'm soaked :o

I'll try and keep updating on this for any others who read this and for whom it strikes a cord...

So I saw the G.P and am being sent for blood/ hormone tests next Friday. I'll post when results come through...

Can I ask how or what you said to be able to get your hormones tested? I went to my GP with a range of other obvious hormone issues (migraines after my period, night sweats, spots on my chin, insomnia around my period, fatigue, most of which came on kind of suddenly so I went to my GP for help) my GP said to me that they can't test for my hormones as they will just look like regular hormones because it's a period related thing.

Wanted me to take antidepressants which seems to be their answer to me from everything from chronic back pain to insomnia. I have no idea what to say to actually get help, my GP doesn't seem to be helping at all and I've seen quite a few from the same surgery.

I will go back, if only to share my suffering (if I'm going to have to live like this, I'm not going away to suffer in silence!). I have had so many people suggest getting hormones checked but any GPs I see just flatly refuse.

Could you see a different GP?

I've been suffering from night sweats since the beginning of Sept, saw my GP this week and had blood tests yesterday, they are checking full bloods, thyroid and all hormones

I've seen so many GPs at my surgery over the years (I've been having night sweats on and off for the last 15 years since I was in my late teens) and each have been as unhelpful as the next. I don't know if it's something I'm saying or not saying, but after checking my thyroid about 8 years ago for this, they just don't do anything now and in my last case, told me that hormones cannot be tested for.
I just wish I knew what it was that I was doing that is causing this to happen because it's a really horrible experience to wake up shivering during the night because you're covered in sweat and then have to go through the whole washing, changing clothes, changing bed sheets....etc. I am fed up with this!
