  • at Canada Water you don't have to exit the barriers to change form the overground to the tube but do touch on the pink reader before you go down the escalator to the Jubilee line

I tried this route last week and didn't touch in (or see) the pink reader.. It didn't seem to matter though.. I got charged as I should..

Do I need to do it? I'll look out for them next time if so!

    Thanks.

Shoreditch is also in zone 1 so would not be cheaper than going to Liverpool Street.

I thought using the overground was cheaper than using the tube though, or am I wrong in that? So it would be cheaper than going on the northern line and walking from Moorgate to Liverpool Street.

From Wandsworth Road you might prefer not to change trains but instead stay on to Shoreditch High Street which is just a few steps from Liverpool Street Station

When going to LS I've been taking the tube to Moorgate and walking from there but maybe the Shoreditch High Street option is cheaper?
How far is "just a few steps"? I didn't think it was as close as that but maybe I'm wrong...

TfL Journey Planner suggests it is 0.3km or about five minutes walk.

A slightly longer walk than from Moorgate.

That single fare finder is very helpful! I had no idea it existed so thanks for that!

It seems Wandsworth Road to Stratford is much cheaper than taking the tube as it's only £1.70 at peak times.
You will still be using the tube, from Canada Water to Stratford.
But from Wandsworth Road to Liverpool Street (the other train station I need to get to in the week) is much more expensive than taking the tube...
This journey involves Zone 1. It also involves the tube, so I don't understand the comparison?
I'm not entirely sure why though... Is it because Liverpool Street is in zone 1? Or do I have to change a few times and that knocks it into two fares?
Yes it's because LST is in Zone 1.

    No you don't.

For travel to the Liverpool Street area only, continuing on foot? Yes, agreed. Not for travel to Stratford (as per the original query) though, but I'm sure that's not what you meant.

There is no requirement to use a pink reader for a journey from Wandsworth Road to Stratford, changing at Canada Water. The default fare is avoiding Zone 1.

London Overground routes are generally set as whatever is cheaper out of the TfL rate, or the National Rail rate.

There is no premium for mixing LO with LU, DLR or other NR.
So it would be cheaper than going on the northern line and walking from Moorgate to Liverpool Street.
Moorgate or Liverpool St will be the same price.

Wandsworth Road - Shoreditch High St on London Overground is £2.90 (M-F 0630-0930) or £1.50 (at all other times)

This price is the same as Wandsworth Road - Moorgate/Liverpool Street if you take one of the cheaper 'alternative' routes e.g. interchanging at Clapham High St/Clapham North. Details in the single fares finder.

    .

I wasn't aware of the default fare but I do so just in case if I pass through especially after reading reports on here of some journeys which have been charged the zone 1 fare.

Just better to be safe than sorry in my eyes.

That's my point though - it's £1.50 from Wandsworth Road to Shoreditch but if I took the nearest tube route - Clapham North to Liverpool Street then it's not going to be as cheap. The Overground fare is the same as the bus fare. The tube is always more expensive.

It's interesting that the Overground option goes up to the same as the tube during peak times, but stays lower during off-peak.

EDIT: I just checked at single fare finder and Wandsworth Road to Shoreditch isn't £1.50 off peak apparently. It's £2.30 just like the tube.

Sorry, do you have a Railcard? £1.50 is the off-peak fare with a Railcard from Wandsworth Road to Shoreditch, and this price is exactly the same as Clapham North to Liverpool Street. If you don't have a Railcard, both are £2.30.

It's £2.30 unless you have a Railcard, then it's £1.50. Must have been some confusion earlier in the thread; apologies about that.

But both fares are the same.

However a higher fare applies if you combine a non-London Overground National Rail 'red route' including Zone 1 in combination with LU or DLR in Zone 1. This applies the ludicrous, dreaded, unfair 'mixed mode tax' which takes many people by surprise.
