OYSTER and TUBE/OVERGROUND mix

I wonder if any London public transport experts will know the answer to this...
I have to get from an Overground station to a tube station and know that I start on the overground and have to change to an underground line mid-way through my journey.
Does this count as ONE journey like it would if I were just changing underground lines? Or does it consider that two trips and charge me for each separately?
I also wonder if I need to tap my Oyster card in and out when I do the change over from an Overground train to an Underground one. I guess the answer to the first question will also answer this one.
Anyone know how this works?
If I travel this way, I might have an easier journey.. but if it's going to charge me two separate fares I'll go a little bit further out of my way and get directly on the tube.
Thanks for the help!

Simply... it will only charge one fare if you don't take too long over it.
Have you seen TfL's Single Journey Fare Finder?0 -
Why don't you be brave and take the risk of telling us exactly which journey you wish to undertake?

Haha - I'll be brave! It didn't seem important but you're right, might make things easier...
I'm going from Wandsworth Road to Stratford. So would go from Wandsworth Road on the Overground to Canada Water and then change to the Jubilee Line across to Stratford.0 -
That single fare finder is very helpful! I had no idea it existed so thanks for that!
It seems Wandsworth Road to Stratford is much cheaper than taking the tube as it's only £1.70 at peak times.
But from Wandsworth Road to Liverpool Street (the other train station I need to get to in the week) is much more expensive than taking the tube...
I'm not entirely sure why though... Is it because Liverpool Street is in zone 1? Or do I have to change a few times and that knocks it into two fares?0 -
The Overground is full integrated into the Oyster charging system so you'll be charged based on the zones you travel through. If you pass through a gateline at Canada Water then you'll need to tap out and in again for the tube segment of the journey. Changing lines in itself does not increase the fare charged, it's based on zone and time of day.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

What's a gateline though? Do you mean the barriers or the things that you tap on that are strapped to a wall or a post in some places?0 -
Yes Liverpool Street would be more expensive as it's in zone 1. The fare for Wandsworth Road-Stratford assumes a change at Canada Water (i.e. not via zone 1) so you don't need to worry about any barriers or touch in/out points along the way.
(Some journeys may require you to touch a pink Oyster validator en route to 'prove' you have not gone via zone 1 - the single fare finder will let you know if that is the case)0 -
gateline = where the ticket gates are. I don't know what the interchange is like at Canada Water. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

From Wandsworth Road you might prefer not to change trains but instead stay on to Shoreditch High Street which is just a few steps from Liverpool Street Station0
-
Shoreditch is also in zone 1 so would not be cheaper than going to Liverpool Street.0

Exiting at Shoreditch and re-entering at LP St would make it two journeys-though the daily cap would still apply, if exceeded. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
