Plumbing help required (leaking flush pipe).

Me and my mate ( a plumber) did a bathroom re-fit a few weeks back for my niece. I don't normally do bathrooms but she wanted it all paneling out with bead and butt boarding and new flooring/skirtings etc, with Victorian roll top bath and high level cistern with chrome flush pipe. After much toil and sweat, working in a small space together, we finished the job and she was delighted with it.

Unfortunately, the toilet has developed a leak after a few weeks use and my mate is now working away and can't get round to sort it, so being the uncle of customer, the job has been handed to me. The leak is where the pipe goes into the flush pipe cone at the back of the loo and is a plastic type with fins. Due to it being a high level cistern, there is a really good pressure of water coming down, with water escaping around the fins and i think also around the pipe.

Being a joiner, i'm not really au fait with this type of thing and was wondering if any of you plumbers have any tips for me to try and remedy the problem. Would buying a different type of cone help or some kind of sealant/plumbers mate do the trick. Someone suggested the the pipe may be too long or short into the pan but i wouldn't think my mate would have done that. Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Pull the fitting out, turn it 180 degrees, warm it with a hair dryer and push it back.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

The cone is clear plastic with four sets of fins.

Is it a new cone - reusing old ones can cause leaks (as I've found to my cost)
  • Yes it's a new one. The toilet has only been in about 6 weeks from new and has just started leaking.
  • Im not a plumber. Just diy. But aftrr somevworl and having fitted new flush cone i had same problem.

My problem was the angle. I cut pipe too long which meant it wasmt going in at righr angle. Trimmed off the pipe and refitted and gotba good seal.

Just what I was going to say. You need to make sure that the finned connector is not under any strain due to misalignment and is pushed right in as far as it will go.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • The angle is correct. It was done by a knowledgeable plumber. I suspect it just needs a new cone, which i will try today. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  • Check the pipe is pushed in, with a high level flush pipe the WC seat might rest against it & over a period of time can push it back & out of the cone

No, it's not that as the chrome flush pipe is flat against the wood paneling and fixed with a chrome pipe clip. It cannot move.

Anyway, i went yesterday and bought a rubber cone to try bit it was useless as it was too slack, so i purchased a new plastic cone the same as the original and swapped them over with the same result. It leaked. While i was in the merchants explaining my problem, a plumber in there buying some stuff told me that they can be a right pain, especially with high cisterns and that if the new one didn't work, take it out, thoroughly clean and dry everything and refit with some silicone around the first 2 fins, then leave for 24 hours before using. I did that and my niece has just texted me to say that it is still leaking when they tried it tonight. Not much but a leak all the same. I'm stumped and really peed off. Had 3 goes at sorting it now. Any tips would be more than welcome.
