  • The Toyota hilux are a bit thirsty 28mpg on diesel 35 on a run, but other than oil change and the odd bulb once every few years, you dont have to spend thousands on mending things that break every other month like range rovers or landrovers.

Rangers averaging 35, are you heavy footed or using Google?

I love my Nissan x-trail. I've got a 2010 Tekna. It's economical in that you can drive in 2 or 4 wheel drive. It tows my horse trailer really well and is great off road in the mud. Its got a reversing camera which I just love (and need!).

The boot is huge and you could definitely fit a few dogs in the back. Its really comfortable and feels like a cross between a big car and a 4x4. I'm actually selling mine as I don't tow anymore and only do short daily journey but I will really miss it and can recommend it.

+1 on the landcruiser. Wife drives one - had it five years, bought at 80k now 140k.

    Eight seats. Goes literally anywhere.

Pulls young drivers, tourists and white van men out of ditches and snowdrifts with ease.

This year we have had to spend more than £20 on a set of wiper blades. Last year it needed a sidelight bulb. So it's not all plain sailing ;)
