WORD/PDF - CV help

Hi.

I am currently in the process of applying for jobs, but many applications let you upload CV only though doc.x, etc.

Sadly, this doesn't allow OpenOffice, which I use.

I am wondering how best to approach this?

Many Thanks

You can save documents in Microsoft's older format .doc in OpenOffice (click the "File Type" drop-down in the Save As.. dialogue), but you cannot save as the newer .docx format, as far as I am aware.

LibreOffice, which is based on OpenOffice will allow you to save as .docx

Be aware that saving documents as a different file type may have an effect on their appearance - altering the position of elements on the page, changing the fonts etc. If it's important that the document looks the same on any computer, and the website allows you to upload it as such, .PDF would work better, as the poster above suggests.
  • If CVs are being submitted to agencies, rather than directly to a potential employer, they may want them as .doc files so that they can remove items like contact details and otherwise adjust them before forwarding to their clients. In those cases sending a .pdf would not be so useful.
