Hi, i use a lot of garlic, and love it. So ive been reading that it can be grown as a perennial, and just wanted to know if anyone has tried growing it this way and if so how does it come back as a perennial when you pull the bulb out the ground? Many thanks.

  • I think the gist of it is that you don't pull all the bulbs, just some of them. The bulbs that remain in the ground will (I assume) eventually spread to form clumps - much like daffodils.

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

    Err....yes.... garlic is perennial.

I expect that's what most of us thought, so we didn't understand what there was to discuss!

Those of us who grow it a bit carelessly often find a few bulbs popping up where it was a year ago. However, I wouldn't advocate doing that deliberately, because it's probably better to move them about to lessen the chance of disease build-up, particularly rusts.

Oh, looks like I've discussed it anyway! :o

  • Normally garlic is planted clove by clove in the same way as an onion set.

And now is the time to do so. Did mine over the allotment today.

I can see how the bulb could be left and indeed grow into a clump.

It doesn't. You have to leave some cloves in the ground to grow on again for the next year.

With this system, it's the bed that's 'perennial', rather than the plants, in that you continue to grow garlic in the same place year after year.
