I'm actually aghast, that there is even one poster here, who still thinks that such fleecing fares are somehow a 'bargain'.
I would not want to commute in London but before you complain too much you need to travel out of town to experience infrequent services that finish early evening and cost more than you pay.0 -
I agree that London travel is frequently crowded but compared to the rest of the country fares are ' a bargain'. Buses in particular in London are generally very frequent and cheaper than most provincial towns, where fares are typically £1.80 increasing for longer routes with fare stages. Senior bus passes are usually restricted to start after 9.30 and not valid all day as in London.

My eldest daughter attends an university in a rural area and when I went up to visit in the half term the fare on a public transport bus to the nearby village was £1.50 for a single adult fare journey and £3 for an all day bus pass (she pays less than this as a student) and the buses go every 15-20 minutes to the local town and run from 6am until midnight. I also could not believe how cheap taxis were, it was £5 for a 6 mile journey, whereas it is three to four times that price in London.
Buses in London may be frequent in rush hour, but they are often so packed that you can't get on them, so have to wait for the next crowded bus.0 -

I would also just recommend using your contactless card on the tube and buses instead of buying tickets or an oyster. It's much easier and even if you don't have one, just request one from your bank.
I can't believe people saying it's a "bargain", it may be more frequent and possibly reliable than a lot of the UK but it's certainly more expensive than most!0 -
I would say the buses are a bargain, and the tube not.
The daily fare cap for buses costs £4.40 (IIRC) and covers a vast area.0 -
Strange - all those people using the Underground who think it is a rip-off, but still use it !
In practice, because of how they value their time and comfort, it will be the best value way for them - or they wouldn't use it.
For their journey, they will have worked out (often by hard experience) they can go quicker and / or more comfortably but it'll cost more, or slower / less comfortably if they want to pay less. Though even walking costs, a good pair of walking boots is well over the cost of a months Zone 1 one-journey-to-work-and-back Oyster. For those millions on the tube every day that journey is the best value on a £/hr basis.0 -
Where I live a bus into town cost £2.80 single or £4 return. It is less than 2 miles to town.
The train to London is around £20 return (I haven't used the train for a few years because of the price). If me and OH drive to Epping and get the circle line through to Oxford Circus it costs around £6 return using our Oyster cards. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

It didn't go to Oxford Circus last time I was there.
Sorry I meant Central Line. Had the after effects of a migraine yesterday so wasn't thinking clearlyThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Two weeks ago I purchased on line Two visitor Oyster cards my wife and myself for our short trip to London.
Everything was fine until our last day on our last tube trip we couldn't tap out at Euston as the barriers were not working so we were charged the maximum fare for that one journey.
I'm now home and don't know what credit I have left on our cards.
I've E mailed TFL twice one automated response but nothing since I've rang them they have an automated answering system that didn't even list my option.
In exasperation I pressed an option actually got a breathing living person to speak to me who said working ext next time press option 2 then option 6 I did this and was on hold for 21 minutes so I gave up should it be this hard to contact TFL IF SO Oyster cards aren't worth having.0
