i recently bought a car from EH,did my research beforehand. went in and before i even sat down to discuss the car told them i was not prepared to pay anything on top of the stickered price else i would walk.they still tried it on with trying to flog extended warranties to which i said i would be sure to bring the car back under the SOGA and it would be up to them to prove no inherent fault even if outside the standard EH 'guarantee'.

paid the stickered price and 8k miles later still happy.to be fair it was the cheapest around.just didnt like the hard sell of optional extras
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.

An oldish thread, but since Google will probably display it for others, I'll add my experience too, even though the question's already been answered.

I recently went to reserve a car I'd seen on their website. While the salesman was filling in the form, he commented "you know about the administration fee?" which he'd already included in the price.

I informed him that I did. As per the note on the windscreen of every car in the showroom, it's an optional fee, and I wasn't interested. Thank you.

After going off and keeping me waiting, for what seemed like half an hour, he returned with the amended paperwork informing me that the branch where the car was currently held was willing to waive the fee.:rotfl:

Still waiting for the car, but if all goes well, I'll have it before Christmas, with a full sized spare wheel thrown in too.:)

My son found a car on one of EHs websites, got it brought to our local dealership under their "Move Me Closer" scheme. When the car arrived we were please with it, pointed out it was due a service within 5,000 miles, stock answer we don't service runabouts, quick reply you don't move runabouts either, red faced salesman. Agreed to service and put a full MOT on it. Told them it was essential we had the vehicle by a certain date as my son was taking us to the airport and we had no other means of transport. Long delay in getting the car and it was apparent it would not be ready for the airport trip, went to see them on the Saturday (Flying on Monday), said if the car was not ready we would not be having the car as I was financing it and would not be available to sign. Things suddenly changed, agreed to lend son a car until his was available, he got a salesman's car with around 1,000 miles on the clock. Agreed and started to sign the documents, paying £1,000 on a credit card (S75 thanks Martin), looked at the documents £99 admin fee, it's for the HPI, don't want it, it will protect you sir, out came my HPI check care of the motor trade, only finance was Evans Halmshaws, apparently that is how they finance the cars, pay off as soon as sold. Off he went to see the dealer principle, in this case we will waive the fee.

Sorry for the length of the post

Hi all, thanks for your comments. I called Trading Standards and talked about the situation. When I went to the dealership I asked them to state in writing that the £99 admin fee is compulsory and not optional as stated and I would look into it after I had paid the fee. It was then waived and I just paid the sticker price. I'm glad I did my research, it's paid off. Thanks.

Hmmm. If it gets to the stage where trading standards are involved I would consider the relationship broken, and would not entertain the idea of buying from the seller. You can bet your house on someone at EH wanting to get revenge for what they'll see as that little 'stunt', which will have been taken out of someone's bonus down the line.

It is perfectly possible to call TS and ask a question without them immediately then rushing around and telling the trader concerned.

Thank you so much. This thread has just saved me £99 as I too was told that the Administration Fee was compulsory. The salesman 'went to check with his manager' and returned with reprinted paperwork when I pointed out it was listed as optional on several other car stickers.

I'm pleased with the car and have agreed to buy it but I wonder what you all think about the guarantee. It has a 5 year manufacturer's warranty that still has 2 years left. When I asked the salesman how long the EH warranty was he said there was none as it had the manufacturer's warranty.

On their website (http://www.evanshalshaw.com/used-cars/) they have 2 profiles listed for their used cars as 'Evans Halshaw Runabout' and 'Evans Halshaw Approved'. Both of these state "Free Main dealer guarantee with this vehicle". Am I being unreasonable in expecting EH to be giving me their own warranty as well? I'd be interested to hear what you all think.

How much warranty do you think they should be giving you? They don't actually have to give you any warranty at all. (Don't confuse warranty with rights under the Consumer Rights Act).

The manufacturer warranty is probably better anyway.

    Yes you are being unreasonable.

The manufacturers warranty would trump any EH warranty so there is no requirement at all to have the EH one.
