Had to do system refresh a year or more ago, and have this folder of removed applications and one is this NVIDIA Graphics Driver 306.97 not sure if this means anything?

Sounds like a dodgy driver could be causing the BSOD.

If you google the thread title, does the first result help?

Which step are you stuck on?

Alternatively, if you can't identify which driver is (possibly) causing problems, it might be worth just going to each manufacturer's website and downloading and reinstalling them all. Maybe you inadvertently installed an incorrect/incompatibly/old/buggy driver previously?

"How Do I Fix a Driver Power State Failure in Windows 8?

"Driver Power State Failure" is an error that is displayed in Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). This error is mostly displayed due to incompatible or inappropriate driver for any hardware device that a computer system may have.

A simple restart is often all that is required to resolve the issue. If the problem still persists even after the restart, the computer must be restarted in safe mode, and the problematic device driver must be uninstalled. Since Windows 8 does not allow users to press F8 or Shift + F8 during system startup to enter the advanced boot menu by default, administrators must enable legacy advanced boot menu manually before entering the safe mode. Once Windows 8 computer is started in safe mode, the problematic driver can be uninstalled to resolve the issue.

After uninstalling the problematic driver, its new and compatible version must be installed.

Note: The exact information of a problematic device driver can be found by going through the minidump file that is automatically generated by Windows 8 when the Blue Screen of Death appears. In order to view the generated minidump file that has .DMP extension, BlueScreenView can be downloaded and executed."

This I don't understand. It's so difficult when these things go wrong.

A "driver" is simply a piece of software (call it an "App" if you prefer) that converts "computerSpeak" to "printerSpeak".
....must enable legacy advanced boot menu....
You need to look up how to do this first of all.

Also look up how to locate and read the "minidump" file.

If you can't do this then your only option is to take your computer to someone who can.

This worries me, taking it to someone who can fix it, is it safe to leave a laptop with someone can they retrieve personal details from your laptop etc.....?

Though since I updated the BIOS it seems to be running better but this could be temporary like before.

they won't fix it, they'll do a re-install, which you can do yourself.

and yes, they can get at your data
Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand
