We flew with Air France last month and the captain reminded passengers that it was a no smoking flight but stated e cigarettes were okay.

Not according to the Air France website.

Use of e-cigarettes is prohibited on all Air France flights. The vapor emitted by these devices may trigger the cabin smoke detectors.
    For what reason?
Some of the e-ciggies that you can buy (especially the flavoured ones) do give off a sickly sweet aroma when in use, something that I wouldn't fancy when on a long haul flight.
  • As an aside, we've just returned from a trip to South America on Air France, and were quite impressed with them. We were in economy, and champagne was served to all. I believe it's the only airline to do that.

There are a number of reasons why E-cigs are not allowed to be used onboard.

    - Some look like a real cigarette and could "encourage" other smokers to light up a real ciggie.

    - Not all e-cigs are the same. Some are cheap and nasty and there have been countless accidents where the e-cig has blown up in someone's face, which is the last thing you want at 36000ft.

-Not enough research on long term effects of "vaping" so we don't know the end result in the use of e-cigs

    - the e-cigs with liquid in them do (mostly) emit a smell of some sort, depending what flavour is used. Lots of people in close proximity will not enjoy this.

You can use an inhaler onboard, those little plastic things from the chemist that looks a bit like a tampon. There's no smell, no fake smoke and doesn't interfere with anyone else's health worries. Or you can just accept that smoking isn't allowed onboard and deal with it, like most people do. I'm a smoker and I fly long haul twice a month as a minimum and it really doesn't bother me. I do have an e-cig (the one that looks like a proper cig) but I never use it onboard.
