Vapour / e-cigarettes

The only info I can find suggests that its only really likley if you stand there and blow a good blast of fresh vapour, straight into the detector itself. So as long as the e-cig isn't one of those steam monsters and the person concerned vapes with a little sense and economy, it shouldn't be a huge risk.
Of course the OP needs to understand that nobody on MSE would actively suggest they break the airlines rules. Its entirely their call if they want to take that risk - The ramifications of our being all-wrong could be quite severe for them!
However, you also need to temember that quite a few airlines sell expensive "approved" e-cigs, solely for use on their flights - Which usually turn-out to be cheap disposables rebranded to the airline and sold for more than ten times their usual price. So it is obviously possible to use an e-cig safely, just they want you to pay dearly for the priviledge.
Don't know if Thomas Cook is one of these sharks though.0 -
I wouldn't be so sure I managed to set off a smoke detector spraying a hair spray/shine product on my hair on a flightI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Not a test but a real life event. I hope this will make you admit that maybe your "advice" wasn't really very good.

is the potential to set off the fire alarms why they aren't allowed? or is it more the perception of other passengers that OMG SOMEONE IS SMOKING ON THIS PLANE! Or that it would make it more likely someone would light up a sneaky cigarette thinking they might get away with it as the flight crew may not notice straight away?
I am just curious why the e-cigarettes are banned and I am too lazy to google.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -

I think it went back to pressure/lobbying from anti-smoking groups determined not to "normalise" e-cig use in any way.
Everything else that followed in justification was more of a poor excuse than anything else.0 -
interesting. I am a smoker and for whatever reason, I am ok on a plane - I guess because I know I can't smoke it just isn't an issue (except the time I watched an episode of Mad Men on the IFE and then I was climbing the walls). I suppose I can kind of see some reasons for banning them...for me, and I know this will be met with all kinds of screeching from certain quarters (I know that cigarette smoke stinks and I am not suggesting that I light up on a plane, so settle down), there are some of those vaping things that produce so much terrible smelling vapour, just thick clouds of it...I would probably prefer not to be able to use an e-cig to avoid the potential of that on a plane. And if a smoker feels that way, I suppose non-smokers must feel even moreso that way.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0

The long & short of it is the airline has banned them - if you're caught using one in the toilets there's a fair chance they can then decide that you are no longer welcome to travel on their aircraft. Ultimately you have to remember that when you're on a plane you are subject to T&C's of carriage which have potentially serious consequences.
Did see one rocket who'd had a few drinks prior to getting on the plane trying to be a smart alec last summer by using one, he was threatened with the police at the other end......Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Understood and I wasn't suggesting flouting the rules, just in case that wasn't clear. I'm well aware of the potential consequences.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0
