NYE in London

DS wants to see the London fireworks! Not my idea of fun at all, but here we go! Any advice on hoping to make it a happy memory rather than a stressful one!

Intention at the moment is to drive.

Last year you had to buy tickets at £10 each well in advance.

Work out how close you want to be -buy thermals and remember anyone with a great view bagged their spot hours ahead of time and have been standing around in the cold most of the day and evening.

You'd probably get a better view on TV but going is all about the experience.

And driving will involve parking a long way away as loads of the centre London roads are shut , park further out and train in

Thanks guys, didn't know you needed to get tickets, so thank you for this.
Indeed, posting in the UK holiday board, had I realised it existed would have made more sense but appreciate your posts.

I would without a doubt opt for the warmth of home and TV, but DS wants the experience unfortunately!

Another question is that is ok, how much do you lose of the experience if you go a bit further away, ie. Greenwich? I really would rather avoid the worse of the crowd, but if it means losing out on the best of the experience, it defeats the whole reason for going!

I don't think you'd even see the central London fireworks from Greenwich. Personally it doesn't appeal at all - I didn't go to the NYE fireworks even when I lived in central London.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Parliment Hill or Primrose Hill are both hills with excellent views of the fireworks.

You also get the bonus of seeing literally dozens of other firework shows at the same time over central London.

A few of my friends avoid the charge by going to bridges not within the ticket area. But they're just as busy as the ticket areas
  • There are a couple of options in this old article as well as several of the ones mentioned above... http://metro.co.uk/2014/11/20/where-to-watch-londons-new-years-eve-fireworks-for-free-4952236/
  • Hi - as someone who 'did' london NYE as a londoner several times can I suggest that you go for the suggestion of Primrose Hill? You see everything and its not as busy. Although my personal preference would be avoid at all costs and watch from home! I used to stand in my local Tesco just off the old Kent road and watch most of them but thats isn't very glam haha!
