Just keep it pleasant and ask them how you can get equivalent seatsChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

See if you can get them to seat you next to an exit, they always have a tonne of legroom, although you need to by physically able...Thinking critically since 1996....0

It's worth giving them a call, and if they can't resolve it over the phone, get to the airport a little earlier than normal (not way earlier, maybe around 3 hours before the flight). If they can't give you seats comparable to those you paid for due to the equipment change, i.e. With extra legroom, you should at least get a refund of the fees you paid, their terms are below. The ASA fee is non‐refundable. The only exceptions are:
a. When as a result of operational, safety, security or other circumstances we are
unable to deliver the pre‐assigned seat(s) or need to change seat assignments and
we are unable to offer a comparable alternative i.e. seating you together with those
travelling with you in the same booking and then in your choice of window seat,
middle seat or aisle seat. Seating together means adjacent, this could be across the
aisle or behind each other. Specific or similar seat numbers are not always
considered a comparable alternative.
b. When a flight is cancelled by Virgin Atlantic and passengers are re‐protected on
alternative flights where similar seats cannot be offered and/or ASA is unavailable.
This includes flights on other airlines.
c. Passengers who are denied boarding due to flight oversales may be offered ASA on
their alternative travel date if the new flight is operated by Virgin Atlantic Airways
and there is availability. If there is no availability on the alternative Virgin Atlantic
flight or passengers are re‐protected on another airline, a full refund including any
taxes paid will be given.
d. If a passenger is unable to sit in the specific seat they have selected because of an
injury (e.g. they have broken a leg, a full refund including any taxes paid will be
given).0 -
I hate when they do this and change planes. You will get your money refunded however.Still doesn't make it right.travelover0

They incur extra admiin costs having to sort out refunds etc.
There will be a valid reason for the change.
It's disappointing for the OP (and anyone else it happens to) but it will be for unavoidable reasons.0 -
Have been on both of these Virgin aircraft and I'd rather be on an A330 than A340!
When can you check in online?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
When can you check in online?
When we arrived at Heathrow a Virgin rep changed our seats for us to 3 together.
Our return flight was operated by Delta on behalf of Virgin. They allowed free seat reservation at time of booking so we booked seats. However quite near the departure time they changed our seat reservation but we were still 3 together. I'm glad they did as OH and DD in 2 by window and I was other side of isle in the 3 middle seats. No one was next to me so I could spread out very nicely for a sleep!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Hello everyone! Thanks for the replies in my absence.
When we dropped our bags, we enquired about seating. The very nice lady said there must have been a mistake and we were not in the seats quoted when I check in online. We had extra legroom seating further back in the plane.
No idea which plane we eventually flew out in, but it was certainly newer and more comfortable than the return flight. The seats seemed a little wider, touchscreens instead of armrest remotes etc. Overall, though, very pleased with the promptness, politeness and ease when flying with Virgin Atlantic.0 -

Sounds like you flew out on the Dreamliner which is the regular equipment fir VS 1 flight."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."
