- universal switch to tiles (get rid of the W7-looking start icons on the desktop).
Right-click on desktop, View, Untick 'Show Desktop icons'?- more consistent use of Jumplists.
That's certainly coming in the November update, they're pretty much sorted in build 10565, the latest preview0 -

The disconcerting thing is that the spinny hour-glass thing comes up for well over 30 seconds when I right-click the desktop. Weird. That's certainly coming in the November update, they're pretty much sorted in build 10565, the latest preview0 -
Is Win 10 actually faster than 7 or 8 ?
Have you actually timed START UP with a stop watch to compare the previous OS to Win 10 ?
To start with - I thought the same but after 3 months, I don't think that Win 10 is any faster - in fact, under certain conditions, it is considerably slower..
This is on both an i5 laptop with 8Gb RAM and an i7 Desktop with an SSD and 12Gb RAM !!
I've not really seen two people have exactly the same problems when describing perceived W10 faults.
A lot seems to depend on what hardware/software/setup people have and those conditions may not apply to anyone else. Which is why, some seem to have few, if any, problems, while others just list a catalog full...
Like all the other OS's, you won't get a unanimous decision on it's performance.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Overall, I'm both impressed and disappointed in it in almost equal measure. It works, and for me, it's faster on virtually everything than W7 was.
There are still mystery crashes, though.
And some of the design elements of W7 seem to "leak through". And it's woefully uncustomisable compared to previous Windows. And the very pale, simple simple graphic design is not to my taste, and customisation is limited. And File Explorer is a mess.
What it needs...
- a simple mechanism for setting up user tiles. (Why can't it use basic HTML for this, with a set of special tags for system/web info? Like special tags in MS Word?)
- a simple mechanism for tweaking the graphic design (whether by a master template or through tweaking individual settings).
- universal switch to tiles (get rid of the W7-looking start icons on the desktop).
- Freecell
- more consistent use of Jumplists.
then download win 10 and do a clean install after deleting all partitions of the old win 7 , that way win 7 will not be on the machine0 -
I mean that graphical/functional elements of W7 remain - I'm sure it is by design. For example, and as discussed, the icons on the Desktop.0

win 10 uses tiles by default , win 7 uses a start menu , just like win 95 , vista and others , do you want tiles (like a tablet/phone) or a start menu?0

I am still running on Win7, I stopped all updates as a result of the enforced upgrade Microsoft have been reluctant to talk about apart from "its in case people change their minds".

I have my Android tablets OH has a Chromebook and I have a shiny new iMac upstairs for when this laptop finally gives up the ghost.
MS went a little too far in the assumption we would ALL want it so I am not likely to miss Microsoft when my Win7 is rendered unusable.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

My W10 install has tiles on a Start menu, and Icons on the Desktop. I'm just saying that it's inconsistent (and previously said that the Tiles are not customisable enough). If W10 uses tiles, then they should all be tiles.
I've installed a third party add-on that allows me to add any executable as a Tile to the Start Menu, and choose the tile image that it uses.0 -
you have got a win 7 /10 hybrid
by default win 10 uses tyles like a tablet/phone , and most (or some users) use classic shell to get the win 7 type menu
if you want the full win 10 "experience" and the default tiles , then you need to do a clean install
as you say win 7 "is leaking thru" , and you probably have a lot of dead files sat doing nothing
I have indeed tried the basic update , and after the upgrade loaded win 10 as a new setup , the win 10 (on its own) uses a lot less space , and seems to run without problems caused by trying to use a "hybrid setup"
dependant on your feelings and the amount of data kept on your machine , perhaps a clean install might help https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
select to burn as iso , or burn to pendrive ,
once completed (I) recommend classic shell0 -
That's not very good. I followed the standard W10 install, from the original W7 upgrade prompt.
I think I'll wait for the November upgrade before I decide whether to reinstall it.0
