An assault on democracy ?

It sounds like Il Presidente followed the constitution.Graham_Devon wrote: »This needs to be stopped before it gets out of control. It's dangerous, it's wrong, and it's yet another appalling step in the same direction from the might of the EU.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0

I'm not sure. My guess is a credulity when reading a news article (s)he agrees with that shows the EU being a bad thing.0 -

Well I'd certainly like to know how anyone can back this up...Democracy must take second place to the higher imperative of euro rules and membership.
Notice not one Pro-EU poster has even tackled that or so much as cast an eye over it.0 -

There's nothing to back up. I've spent the last 60 seconds researching the Portuguese constitution which makes me an expert compared to the Telegraph reporter. Seems their electoral system isn't dissimilar to ours although they have a rather modern idea that the head of state should be elected.0 -

Do you agree with or disagree with the statement?0 -

The incumbent in a hung parliament gets first dibs at forming a government. If they choose to go the minority route and there's a majority coalition they won't survive a vote of no confidence.
I wouldn't like to say I agree or disagree based on my, now, 3 minutes of research on the matter.
The statement appears to be a simple declaration of the author's position and irrelevant unless you like to form opinions based on the story telling skills of story tellers.0 -

So you won't state you agree or disagree, though are happy to simply call it an irrelevance?
The relevance of such a statement, in the context it's set in is absolutely HUGE.
The dance you are eloquently displaying to dodge the question shows just how large a statement it is.0 -

You do realise it's Ambrose Evans Pritchard's statement, do you?Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -

You agreed with it straight off based on even less research into the Portuguese constitution than the 3 minutes I put in. That says more about you than you're self aware enough to realise.
It's a one-liner from someone with an opinion. As, it seems, a similar process can happen in the case of a hung parliament in the UK I'm tending to think an assault on democracy hasn't taken place.
If there's a clear majority against the new government then it won't last anyway.0 -
The same can happen in the UK yes. But you are relying on technicalities to ignore the real events going on here.
Doubt it would though - it's crossing a line that would be too controversial to cross. However, in the name of protecting the EU it seems it's no longer a problem.0
