Friday 23rd Oct - what small DFW things will you do today?
determined_new_ms
Posts: 7,884 Forumite
When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.
But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free!
Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending! :money:
Morning everyone :wave: Need to be quick as am dropping dgd off at the cm's this morning as I have a meeting at 11. Additional session is going to cost me £13
Big thing for the day - we have the plasterer in doing our room. This is both :j and :eek: have given him strict instructions to not get plaster on our hall stairs!
Small things:
* make dgd's packed lunch
* checked banking
* received £11.18 interest on savings :T skimmed over into spending account
* an hours gardening - have a think about what is the best thing to do. Foxgloves do you put manure on your veg patch over the winter?
* nip into b&q and get fertislier and bits I didn't get yesterday
* onepoll? Maybe...
* nip to supermarket and get some strategic groceries to eek out stocks
Ok that's all I can think of right now! Have a good day x

Morning!
Thanks to DNMS for starting us off.
Hugs to those who need it
Didn't get a couple of things done last night cos I was just tired and sad when I got home. Just a temporary blip though as I'm perky again today!
I spoke to OH about the jukebox repair. I told him that I didn't think that there would be much money to do such a thing and that I wasn't really comfortable about dibbing into the savings for something so non-essential. He countered that he would like to get it done soon as there wasn't much point in keeping it if it didn't work. We've agreed to come up with a savings plan for the new year. *compromise*
Today's list:- B/L from stores - done
- Dinner out using groupon style voucher from local deals company
- Charge phone in work - done
- Use work wifi - done
- Put washing away - done
- Crochet (the intarsia pattern now has NINE balls of yarn hanging off of it!!)
- Work very hard
- Go for a run at lunch time if not raining - done. best ever pace and not too breathless! All this crossfit and no booze must be paying off! I've also lost about 4lbs in 3 weeks.
- Bring washing off line later
- Possibly sort out big pile of kale and chard in fridge but might be a job for tomorrow morning
- Check online banking and reconcile spreadsheet
Have a good one all

I was looking at my upgrade date on the MyVodafone app today and I noticed that on my bundle I have free access for BT WiFi!
Looks like when you are at a BT WiFi hotspot, you sign in with your network provider and use your normal login details for your phone account.

Morning

I'm being a bit naughty today and sneaking on from work. I really shouldn't be - I should be getting my marking done etc... but I just wanted to pop on and set up my list for today so I can be accountable for it later. Appointment with the doctor was fine - as I suspected there is no short term fix and she doesn't think that there is anything wrong with me and what I'm doing, other than I'm exhausted, so I've been told to swallow my pride and ask for help if I need it. I don't know if I feel better or not yet. We'll see...
So here's today's list
check banking
get kids to school in fancy dress :eek:
doctors appointment
make productive use of my time at work (as soon as I'm finished here)
mark a set of books
do not stress
aim for an early night and a good night's sleep
try and encourage dh to self refer to the mental health team
ask somebody for help with one thing
get ds off to footy training
inventory of food cupboards for weekly shop ahead
Think that's it - I need to get straight back off here and straight on with work. Have a good day and I'll check in properly once I'm home later.
Not giving up
Working hard to pay off my debt
Time to take back control

Hi All
Gorgeous autumn colours here. DD doing the weekly shop again this week. We are on a roll and she only buys what is on the list. Nothing extra. Saving me around £10 a week.
Went to sheep sale last night and was very sad to see the industry is now so sad that beautiful young breeding ewe lambs were being sold for killing price. Please buy British/Welsh lamb.
Anyway I am now back in work and need to focus and stop procrastinating. No internet at home so see you all Monday.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Afternoon all!
Made homemade burgers last night but split the mince and made a bolognaise type sauce (incorporating a manky carrot) with the other half. Thought OH would complain that they were small but he just complimented the taste!
And I actually managed a NSD yesterday!
Today I have/will:-
* Check banks
* Decide what to do with excess in bills account
* Freeze crumpets
* Do washing up
* Turn straighteners off at the wall
* Take lunch to work (used left over rolls from last night to save them going to waste and used the roll packet to put them in rather than foil)
* Charge phone in work
* Update work expenses
* Create spreadsheet for coming month
* If I get paid today (either today or Monday) pay some off CC and update signature, spreadsheet and snowball
* Dinner from stores
* Sort out clothes
* Check diary to see where I've got to go tomorrow and when (helping at a kids party)
That's everything I can think of for now.
Hope you all have a great day.Debt as at 5 June 2023 - £15,600.89

Hello Money-savers,
So payday rolls another day closer. Must admit I'll be glad to see it this month. Busy day so far, most of it money saving, except grocery shopping which went over budget. Was annoyed, but then realised that if we'd just shopped at Aldi, even with bottle of cava & a few extra baking ingredients, we'd have actually been 53p UNDER budget. We went over because we went to Waitrose to pick up a few bits for the special anniversary meal I'm cooking on Tuesday, & the alternative to cooking at home would have been to go out for a meal, so will still cost a lot less in comparison. Anyway, now for the good things:
*Cleaned whole house using minimal chemicals & washable microfibre cloths.
*Needed small thing to put in with middle-sized nephew's birthday present. Found a perfect fun item for a very few quid.
*Free coffees in Waitrose & free 'Guardian' (loyalty card).
*Made Christmas & birthday labels using craft papers & coloured threads that were given to me & a stash of card rescued by mr f from the bin at work. As I snaffled a glue stick from his pencil case, I can say that it was a real thrift project & the labels look quite nice.
*Enter 2 competitions.
*Divvy up & freeze the pear compote I made yesterday. Eat some more pears. I had 3 yesterday so was feeling really virtuosic, but then mr f ate five! Why is everything a competition with those of the male persuasion?!
*Finally got the camping box repacked & put away. Apart from a £2 pack of heavy duty clothes pegs (we kept finding small problems on our last trip that would have been solved easily with a few extra pegs!), no expenditure needed. Everything checked, restocked & ready for next year. Can't wait. Love going off in our tent!
*Bought flat non-stick baking tray in Waitrose. Reduced price. Have wanted one of these totally flat ones for ages for biscuits, oat cakes, etc, & some of the prices I've seen have just been ridiculous. This was about £6 & looks just what I need.
*Decided to try an Aldi deodorant - 49p. I get an allergic reaction to many deodorants, but at 49p, I thought I'd have to give it a try!
*All free leisure today - knitting more Christmas present, reading library book & possibly writing up the next part of my family history project.
Hope everyone's having a decent Friday as far as individual circumstances allow.
Love f x2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0 -
Maria - I do so agree with you about the sheep farming.....though from a customer's point of view of course. Today, we went in Waitrose to buy a couple of lamb shanks. To be fair, there was a decent amount of British lamb on display. We don't buy New Zealand lamb or Danish bacon as we can't understand why our shops are flooded with the bloody stuff when the UK has such a strong tradition of sheep & pig faming. Found some nice pre-packed lamb shanks but a bit too expensive at around £10 for two......Duchy Organics......say no more.......so went to the butcher's counter to see if they had any. They did. For two lamb shanks I paid £3.31. That seemed to be going to the other extreme! I want to pay both a fair price for me as a customer with a budget, but also a fair price for the farmer. I have seriously been thinking about sourcing somewhere where I can get a half lamb box direct from the farm. I suppose that would at least cut out the middleman in terms of the supermarkets. With your professional farming hat on, do you think that's a fairer way to buy? It's frustrating for us as ethically-minded customers because we can only buy what is available at the prices charged. We are able to buy some of our veg from a local farm as they bring it to market (all lovely seasonal stuff they've grown themselves) each week. The quality & flavour is amazing. The most enormous cauliflowers I've ever seen for 80p each.......& only 8 food miles.
Anyway, just wanted to say that as a customer, I don't think what's happening to the farming industry is fair either. Neither is it sensible. As an island nation, it would make a lot more sense to secure our food-producing capabilities for future generations, not stand by while our farmers are financially ruined by the supermarket & cheap food culture. Grrr. I've wound myself up now. Better sign off before I start making a placard!
