Are you insured to drive to work?

Hi

Anyone who has insured their car for social, domestic and pleasure can't drive to work as commuting to work isn't included.

You need to have commuting insurance to be able to drive to and from a permanent place of work.

Can someone clarify this in case I'm not understanding this properly??

I'd imagine a lot of people have this type of insurance and drive to work.

Have I misunderstood?

Some insurers include commuting within SD & P, some don't. As it says in the link "it's best to check when you get your quote".
  • I add business use as well, for the 3 or 4 days a year I might have to commute to another site.

I'm not sure that you need to do that - but it would depend on your insurer, of course.

At one time I was a 'Supply Teacher/Lecturer' and travelled to several different colleges pretty much at random as the need arose.

I explained this to my insurers and they were quite happy with it - simply as 'commuting' - they didn't even need a list of the possible addresses/locations.

If you use your car after you've started work and before you finish work but not for domestic reasons over your lunch hour you really should have business use added on to the policy. I wouldn't want the insurer trying to get out of a claim because you were asked to drive to a different site during work hours for work purposes. It's not that much more expensive.

My insurance would allow me to drive to my usual place of work & home again, but not to drive for business purposes during the day. Check your small print.

The business use makes no/minimal difference to the premium, but as I'm being paid during the commute (wage, not mileage), I decided it's better to be safe than sorry.

I took out a policy tonight (via Adrian Flux) on a second car and included commuting. They questioned whether it was to one specific site or not.

I am insured with Aviva and they do not include commuting with social domestic and pleasure, you need to declare commuting separately

Direct Line's policy document states, "social, domestic & pleasure."

That also includes commuting as standard (clearly it's too much trouble for them to list that extra word on the policy) and they will generally add business usage without an extra charge.

If the option was there i always added commuting, but some must assume its required if your working?

Didnt make any difference when doing quotes recently.

Individual insurers vary in whether you have to add commuting on or not, so always call the insurer to check when taking out a policy. There's often a distinction between:

    1. Social, domestic and pleasure
    2. Commuting to/from a regular place of work
    3. Travelling on business (ie not just commuting - going out from your normal place of work on business trips)
