S6 screen cracked, bricked, how to retrieve contacts?

OH has a Galaxy S6. Only a few months old. Carries it in a fancy top of the range shatter proof case. Took it out of his pocket this morning, and it was dead. Then saw a small curved crack across the top right corner of the screen (no cracks on the shatter proof case it was sitting inside.)

Would not come on, no life at all. Took it into phone shop where they scratched their heads and basically said Dunno mate, are you insured? (In fact he is.)

So he has had to get a new one and pay the excess with no idea how the screen crack got there. Or why this has also bricked the phone. Anyone else had this?

Meanwhile, anyone got any ideas on how to retrieve his contacts list - he can see the contents by cabling it up to his PC - but has no idea where they are or how to retrieve them?

Are they not synchronised with his google online account?

Does the PC software he is using to see the contract not offer any option for exporting them?

No he does not sync with his google account (long boring reasons.) However he has found some software which will copy phone data etc onto pc and back.

HOWEVER looking closer at screen, crack is not in the external glass but inside it. Doing a quick search around the web there is some suggestion that the S6 batteries can overheat and expand and this cause screen internally to crack.

Bit disappointing considering it is supposed to be gorilla glass and he has a special reinforced carry case with heavy duty glass and reinforced corners etc. There is a fine curved crack around top right hand side from top edge to right edge However it is not case glass or screen glass which is broken, it is internal screen inside the glass. Phone works but no screen visible.

The crack is from dropping it .
GGlass is of no use if you drop the phone .

KIERS is the Samsung software .
Recuva may enable him to recover data .

Take it never backed up contacts to the sim card either ??

It is not the glass which is cracked it is the screen behind it, it is called the amoled I think. He did not drop it, he was out playing bridge with his friend. He left it on the side table and it was working when he put it there and not working when he picked it up again at the end of the game.

A battery can overheat during charging or heavy using.

Trawling around the web, I found this on a techie site (OH has intact glass but cracked Amoled)

"So it seems the people reporting issues (with Galaxy) are generally split in to two camps; those with the outer glass and the AMOLED (the bit that actually displays the image) cracked ; and those with an intact outer glass but still have a cracked AMOLED underneath it. Given the sheer number of people reporting both, I suspect both of these are down to a weakness/design flaw within the Galaxy Sn range but it’s pretty clear that the latter – cracks in the AMOLED with an intact cover glass – is definitely a fault. After all, the purpose of the Gorilla Glass is to protect the AMOLED underneath.

"Some on the web are suggesting that the AMOLED might be cracked from underneath by a swollen battery – another known issue – but this seems unlikely to me as the battery comes out very easily and is really only held in by the back panel which has plenty of ‘give’ in it and also pops of easily too.

"What I figure is more likely, but probably isn’t what people want to hear, is that the Gorilla Glass is more flexible than the AMOLED underneath and so flexing the phone breaks the AMOLED, leaving the Gorilla Glass untouched.

" Unfortunately there’s no way Samsung are going to admit liability or any kind of fault on their flagship phone."

    Nonsense.
There are flexible screen protectors with glass layer.
Gorilla glass is thinner than the glass screen underneath and protects from scratches in the first place, not from bending and impacts.

OK still a mystery how it happened. Interestingly his previous phone, an S4 just bricked one day for no apparent reason. Guy in phone shop said they were seeing increasing number of these but we assumed it was because he had had it a couple of years. This S6 is only about 4 months old.
