Just because the op can afford to repay a loan doesn't mean to say all those with a disability could

Of course not, but it means that some do and that's what gets people annoyed and why they wish disability benefit was allocated on actual need rather than perceived need for it to be then spent on things unrelated to their disability.

What annoys me is people's attitude to disability does a disabled person have no right to improve their house? Or have a reasonable standard of living?

Equality is not about subsistence it is about being able to do the same things you would have done if you hadn't had a disability. That is what Equality means!

Are you suggesting people with disabilities should live in houses that are falling apart?!

What someone choses to do with their income (whether it comes from disability benefits or not) to improve their home why is that such a big deal?!!

Sad sad people who want everyone to "exist" not live and enjoy their lives as best they can within the confines of their disability!

I am disabled not unemployed. My disability payment is enough to pay the repayments. I am not worried about that but what I cant do is pay it all out in one go (because I am on benefits and have no savings). We don't drink and don't smoke or anything like that so we can cover our payments. I can afford to borrow money to fix our wrecked house but I'm not going to get into debt if there is no point. I am ill enough without having the worry of the debt for no reason. I just want to know if I will get in trouble or penalised for the few days the money is at £15000 in the bank. Please don't discriminate against me. I have worked all my life until now but now I can't. If I were unemployed I would wait till I got a job but my disability will not ever go away so I can never ever do the repairs to my home without borrowing. I just want to know if its allowed or will they say it is savings and take it (bit by bit) off me so I won't get the repairs and will be left 15000 in debt for nothing.

So wheres the £300 been going?

    Who cares?

    THE OP HAS LEFT!!

Could be any number of things maybe they have decided not to have a car and spend it on their home.

    What ever their business.

  • Just borrow it and don't worry about it once you've paid a couple of payments it won't matter anyway

It's a really important point. If they have £300 spare to pay for a loan then they should have some savings from that surplus every month. Otherwise this huge loan could be a starting point for a life enslaved to the debt which is something worth asking "probing" questions anonymously in a hope to avoid, even if the OP is ultra-sensitive to any questions and has a bunch of people happy to defend her to the death to get into £15ks worth of debt.

I'd suggest those people so keen to see the OP plunged in to debt should spend some time on the DFW, bankruptcy and loans forums to see how painful and destructive it can be.

Not keen at all to see them plunged into debt, did anyone say they were? But their choice which they made clear they didn't want to discuss..

If someone has made their mind up about something very unlikly they will take any notice of anonymous posters.

The OP came to a money saving forum asking if their benefits would be affected by taking out a huge loan.

So as far as you're concerned they've made their decision and nobody should discuss.

Over the course of the five year loan, I expect the OP will be reassessed for ESA and transitioned from DLA to PIP. I hope all goes well for the OP now that she has made her decision to take on a huge debt.

Oh well then. Im sure your point is far more important than mine.
Or else why did you post at all?

It's absolutely bonkers that the OP is provided with enough money to not only allow them to live comfortably, but also to be able to service re0payments on a loan of £300 per month.

It's not OP's fault. If they're being OFFERED the money, they're not likely to turn it down are they? Who would? The problem is the Benefit System as a whole, which is now completely out of control.

Obviously, mine is an unpopular view in these parts judging by some of the other reactions here.
