Tablet for a 5 year old

Hi,


I am debating about what tablet to get for my 5 year old. My oldest has a google nexus 7 (2012) and that is fine for what she uses it for.


He will mainly be using it to watch films and play games/apps.


It won't be used that much - more for car journeys things like that so I don't want to spend too much money on it. I had a look at the google nexus 7 and to get a new one is about £100 (for the 2013 version).


It notice you can get the Linx7 for about £55 and wondered if that would be okay ? What are the main differences between that and the google nexus 7?

Whatever you do, don't consider the Hudl, Tesco is withdrawing it, and it's not available online in the Tesco store.

thanks I just noticed you are getting the HP Slate 7 inch for £50 - any ideas if that's any good? thanks

Linx runs Windows, the HP Slate runs android. Does it matter to you what platform is used?

My son has used a Samsung kids tab for over 2 years.
Basically a tab 3 7" with kid friendly OS.
What about the new Amazon kids tab? The damage replacement cover makes it attractive.

Admittedly not cheap.
Plenty of decent sub £50 android tabs if you are happy without the kid friendly front end.

There's always the new £50 Amazon tablet. Great if you've got Amazon prime (especially since you can download content to watch when away from wifi)

It's also got a microSD card, so you could load that up with videos

Now it's not a 'proper' android tablet, and you don't get the play store.. but it'd do for your 5 year old, for most things.

For road trips I normally use a portable DVD though..

They run on two completely different systems. The Nexus 7 that your older child has runs on android. You might find it easier to have both tablets running on android.

I don't have a Windows or android tablet, but do have Windows on my phone, compared to the old android one that I had, just seems to run that bit smoother. However, that is a personal preference, and others prefer android, so I couldn't possibly advise you either way.
There are more apps available for android than for Windows. Best thing to do is check out if the apps that your child would be likely to use are available.

shared data connection + Netflix or films on device.

For a five year old, I'd be looking for a tablet which could have a good rugged cover, and you would have to factor this into the cost of buying a tablet. I'd be sussing out tablets, then seeing if I could get a good rugged cover to fit before I'd buy the tablet.

It doesn't appear to have a slot to take Micro SD Cards.

Will the internal storage (16GB, IIUC) be enough?
